“I’m usually the one to set these things up, not the one actually participating in them,” Blossom blushed. She reached a shaky hand forward and picked up her glass of water. she gulped down two large sips to try to ease the dryness of her mouth. Why was she so damn nervous?
“I can tell. You look even more nervous than I do,” Chance chuckled. “But I suppose it’s the irony of life. You create blind dates and set people up with their forever after, yet when it comes to your own love life, you hardly know where to begin.”
“Tell me about it. I just—I love seeing people in love. I suppose it’s because I haven’t experienced it yet. But I can understand people. Their wants. Their needs. Their desires. It’s like a part of me opens up and connects with the people who use my company to help them find their prince charming’s or their queens. And I know it might sound crazy but my work has led me to believe that there’s someone out there for everyone. Unluckily for me, I just haven’t found my perfect someone. But alas, this date could turn things for the better,” she smiled.
“Oh, well indeed I hope it does. When I found your company, it was intriguing. Born into a wealthy family, I never knew who was my true friend or who was around me for the benefit of being around me. In my last year of college, the woman I thought I would marry truly only thought that if she had my child she would be set for life. I didn’t need that kind of energy. And it took a lot for me to trust anyone.”
“How come you decided to put yourself out there again?” Blossom asked.
“I’m lonely,” he replied solemnly. In his eyes, Blossom saw a flicker of sadness. But then he looked at her and smiled.
“I realized that one woman’s mistake shouldn’t ruin my life. And truth be told, I still want to fall in love. Be married. Have children. I can’t do that sitting at home hiding from women because I’m afraid my heart will be broken. I suppose I just have to keep a watchful eye for the right woman. Then I figured, why not get some help from an expert. However, the moment I walked into your office I knew that there was no woman you could set me up with that I would even consider because when I looked into your eyes, I immediately fell.” Blossom felt her cheeks warming. She took another sip of her water and smiled at him.
“I am glad you gave my company a shot. And you’re right, hiding never solves anything. You’re not the first man to ask me on a date and I think I’ve said no to those other men because I was kind of hiding too. But that’s not the way to find happiness. So, when you asked, I just leapt and said you know what, fuck it. Let’s go for it. And here we are.”
“Here we are,” he smiled. He raised his glass of wine. Blossom followed his movement, clinking her glass with his.
“To many more dates,” he toasted.
“To many more,” she repeated.
Three months ago,
As they had toasted for, Blossom and Chance went out on dates every week for an entire month. Every Friday or Saturday night she would find herself in another pretty dress, excited to go and meet a man she saw great potential in. His olive colored skin was always glowing with the charm of his masculinity, and the tousled wavy dark hair that fell onto his shoulders and framed his handsome face always caught the attention of women when they were together.
“So, is tonight the big night?” Blossom looked at her assistant who was carrying a large bouquet into Blossom’s office.
“To my pretty Blossom. Can’t wait to see you tonight.” Valorie read the card that came with the large array of flowers. This wasn’t the first time Chance had flowers sent to their office for Blossom. Sometimes, Valorie found herself jealous that Blossom had an attentive man like Chance. Then again, Blossom was such a genuine woman it was hard to hate on her.
“Those are stunning,” Blossom said, standing from her desk. She took the flowers and went over to her bay windows, to set the vase down.
“Answer me girl. Is tonight the night?” Valorie asked, walking to the bay windows as well. She sat on the ledge and looked at Blossom.
“I don’t understand what you mean,” Blossom smiled shyly.
“You know exactly what I mean,” Valorie winked. Blossom groaned.
“I don’t know what to do! I mean, I haven’t had sex with a man for nearly three years! And Chance is so, he’s so suave and smooth and I don’t want to be a complete spaz. But then again, both my mind and my body are curious. We’ve been doing this dating thing for a month. I don’t think it’s bad to sate my curiosity right now, do you?”
“Girl please. I would have fucked that man on the second date. I need to know from the get go if I’m dealing with a man that needs to be taught or if he’s a professor of the bedroom. I say, if you’re curious. Just do it.” Blossom envied Valorie for her carefree attitude. She was the epitome of the new age woman, unafraid of the harsh titles a woman could obtain from simply exploring their sexual desires. She had tried to hook Valorie up with the man of her dreams, but Valorie wasn’t that type of woman. She had made it clear, she loved sex and relationships but she wasn’t ready to be tied that. To Blossom, that was perfectly fine. A woman who knew what she wanted was powerful. She would never fault Valorie for it. Somehow the two very different women had become friends through their work. The day Blossom signed the lease to the office was the day her inquiry on Indeed for an assistant was filled by Valore Gunn, and that was history. It had been three years since then.
“But what if I suck?” Blossom asked.
“Blossom. You’re a woman. The only sucking you can possibly do is to erections. You have the power of a vagina, Blossom. Don’t worry about not being with a man for three years. The power of the vagina is not a fleeting thing. You’ll be fine.”
“We’re going to his home for dinner tonight,” Blossom admitted.
“See! Girl, he is setting you up for the kill. He’s definitely getting in those panties. Just go with the flow. It will be alright. But make sure you give me all the details Blossom because I’ve never been with a white man. I need to know if it’s worth the try. Hey, I bet he’s never been with a black woman before either,” Valorie smiled.
“I actually asked him. He told me he hasn’t. The conversation started because I was getting some stares from white women while we were on our second date. He didn’t seem bothered by it but I was uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s weird. A white woman wouldn’t hesitate to suck a black dick if it dangled in her face, but let a black woman try to date a white man. It’s like the damn apocalypse,” Blossom muttered.
“Because, black men are good for affairs and orgasms. But white women apparently don’t trust them to build homes, provide protection, and secure careers. Sadly, where a black woman will back a brotha up, that same brotha would rather be with that white woman. That is the world we live in. But don’t worry. Race is a social construct. In the end the heart wants what it wants despite the color of skin.” Valorie winked at Blossom and stood.
“I’m going to organize your calendar. You have a lot of meetings next week.” Blossom nodded at her as Valorie walked out of her office hummin casually. Blossom promised that one day she would be just as carefree as Valorie was.
Later that night, Blossom was dressed in a wine colored dress that hugged her curves. She already knew that Chance’s favorite color was red. She was hoping to intrigue him the moment he laid eyes on her. As arranged, a car came by her home and picked her up. The driver greeted her tenderly and escorted her to the car. She never really thought of Chance’s money, but the moment she saw how formal the driver was, she began to realize that he had truly grown up with riches. Then there was his home. It sat on top of a hill surrounded by black iron gates. An access code was needed for them to drive up the mile long driveway. Blossom was in awe. She knew that Chance was sensitive about his money and she didn’t want to appear too star struck but she had to admit that she’d never even been in a mansion before. Average women just didn’t experience that.
