I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at her, but I did read up on pregnancy hormones, so I decided laughing wouldn't go down well with her.

“Baby, you have a beautiful neck. I've not touched another person's neck since you allowed me access to yours. But I will not choke you while I fuck you.”

“Fine,” she said crossing her arms with her face like thunder, reminding me of our earlier days. “But I think you have been reading too many pregnancy and parenting books.”

“I don't sleep much at night,” I said in my defence.

“You don't choke me awake either,” she grumbled.

I bit my lip to contain my mirth and hugged her to me, uncaring that her arms were still crossed. I rested my chin on her head before I tightened my arms around her.

“I would rather harm myself than endanger you or our baby,” I murmured before kissing the top of her head.

She relaxed against me before placing her arms around my waist.

“So Derrick is in Elgin?” she said, completely changing the subject.

“Yes, I didn't want to ask Alexander or Silas since they have their own families to care for.”

“Hmm. I can't wait to see Holly’s baby. I heard they keep arguing if it will be a boy or a girl.”

She suddenly looked up at me.

“What do you want?”

“Whatever you produce.”

She grinned.

“Good answer,” she said, patting my cheek.

Chapter 18

Charlotte

A few nights later, Samuel was jerking me awake and not in a good way. I groaned and tried to pull the covers over me.

“I will consider waking up if you choke me,” I grumbled before closing my eyes again. “A little,” I added because a girl could live in hope.

“Baby, Glenda took a fall. We need to go to the hospital,” Samuel said softly. “Your phone was vibrating, and I answered it.”

My eyes jerked open, and I felt panicked as I sat up.

“I-is she okay?”

“No broken bones but the doctors are still assessing her,” he said as he got up and whizzed around the room in a blur.

When he stopped and stood in front of the bed. He was fully dressed, and he had laid some clothes out for me. My lips trembled, and I blinked my tears away as I looked at him.

“Thank you,” I said before I quickly got out of bed to change.

Samuel didn't hesitate. As soon as I was dressed, he lifted me up and raced down the stairs towards the car.

When we reached the hospital, all I could think of was my elderly grandmother crumpled up on the floor in her home. Thankfully, her apartment was on the ground floor.

“Perhaps we could ask Glenda to move in with us? There is plenty of room,” Samuel said as we briskly walked towards her ward.

I stopped and pushed myself upward to kiss his cheek.
