His mouth popped open, and he practically sputtered at me. But before he could say anything another Fae came at us. He barely had time to block the swing of the sword while protecting me.

“This shit is annoying.” Landers grunted, pushing the Fae away. He came right back like he was on a string.

There was no way we were going to be able to keep this up.

“We need to help Philit!” Zilon ran up to us, pulling me from Landers as we turned toward Philit, he was no longer keeping the Fae back.

“Go.” Landers moved to block another Fae, sweeping me behind him with his tail. I hovered behind him, trying my best to stay out of their way. I could see why dragons were formidable even outside of dragon form. They were bigger than the Fae, and definitely stronger, but without fight training it wasn’t enough.

“Screw this shit” Landers said, that same magnetic force as before tingling over my skin.

“Landers! No!” He was going to shift.

I dodged a flying arrow in my attempt to stop him, only to turn and come face to chest with a tall Fae. He grinned down at me before grabbing me and jumping away. I screamed, getting Landers’ attention. He swore as he screamed, his body rippling as the Fae yanked me into the woods, the guys disappearing through the trees and bushes.

“Let me go,” I screeched, kicking and hitting the tall man. It did nothing to the Fae though as he practically threw me over his shoulder, his jagged bones digging hard enough in my stomach, making it harder to breathe.

“Stop! We are trying to save you!” The Fae was clearly delusional.

There was a loud roar that shook the trees and the Fae froze, something that was clearly a swear passing by his lips as I looked up to see Landers coming at us fast.

Landers was on his way. It wasn’t too late. I grabbed onto a large tree branch as the Fae raced past it, my hands screaming as the bark scratched my palms. I didn’t let go, letting my hands act like an anchor and sending us down to the ground.

We were both rolling down the small hill and toward the massive red dragon who was screaming and chomping at the Fae who were attacking him.

They were no match for a dragon, and even without his flame they retreated quickly.

Philit and Zilon burst through the trees, the two of them picking me up as Landers patrolled the tree line, all of us heaving in expectation of their return.

There was only silence.

Zilon was at my side, pulling me into him. “Rayna? Are you okay?”

“What?” I blinked and finally looked at Zilon, noting the bruising along his jaw, and a small scratch along his cheek, close to his nose. “Shouldn’t I ask you that?”

“I’m fine. Dragon’s heal quickly. You aren’t hurt, are you?”

I shook my head. “Just a little bruised probably, well and I tore the shit out of my palms.” I looked down at them, the entire surface was covered in blood. Okay, that was worse than I expected.

But at least I had fought back.

I glanced back over at Landers, Philit saying something to him in a low voice. At first, it seemed like Landers didn’t hear him, but then he stepped back, his front leg moving to reveal the Fae that had taken me. That Landers had caught.

Philit grabbed the long haired male, restraining him quickly as Landers shifted back down to his human form. He raced into the trees before I could get more than a passing glance at the impossible round, firmness of his ass.

“He’s still alive,” Philit said, dragging the Fae back to us. That was hard to believe, he didn’t look alive. He looked half stomped.

“Good. Maybe we can get some answers.” Zilon pulled me around him, keeping me as far from the Fae as he could.

“That’s what I was thinking.” Philit grinned as he walked past us, still dragging the unconscious Fae over the dirt and brambles. “Maybe we can finally give our side the upper hand in this damn war.”

Chapter Thirteen

We ran in the dark, knowing we needed to get out of there before they came back. I tried to follow the glint of the dragon's scales and the woosh of their tails as we ran through the dark, but even the stars and moon couldn't make it through the trees. Philit was carrying the Fae, the man starting to rouse as he bounced on Philit’s back. Zilon and Landers had gathered everything from the camp in two large bundles, which left me to trip and flail my way after them.

At least I was keeping up, not that Zilon would let me fall too far behind.

Every time I fell he slowed his pace, letting me pick myself up before we took off again.
