Lucca’s expression turned serious, and he gazed down at Maddy. “If you need any help with Grant, just ask.”

Sadness formed a lump in her throat, and she nodded.

Lucca looked at the guys. “I’m assuming one of them is going with you? Or do you want me to go?”

Her heart swelled at the offer. “Thank you, but yes, they’re going with me.”

“Okay, but please keep me up to date about what happens.” He backed toward the door. “I’ll let you go.”

“Thank you,” Maddy called after him.

Skylar rubbed her back. “Ready to leave?”

She let out a deep breath. “No, but let’s go.”

On the drive to the hospital, she reflected on her time with Grant.

Since they’d left rehab, something about him had bothered her, like his freakouts when she left town and how he knew where she lived, but she’d let self-doubt convince her she was imagining things.

She was pissed to discover her instincts were right and angry that he’d gotten involved in all of this.

When they arrived at the ICU area, they were once again shown to a conference room.

They sat in silence, waiting for Dr. Ash to join them.

The door opened, and the doctor jerked back in surprise when he saw how many people had come with Maddy.

“Ms. Walsh, it’s nice to see you again,” he said, while eyeing the guys.

“You, too, Doctor.” Maddy gestured at the guys. “These are my boyfriends. It’s all right to talk in front of them.”

The doctor’s eyebrow shot up, but he didn’t comment otherwise as he took a seat at the table. “We ran the test, and I’m sorry to say that there’s no brain activity.”

Maddy’s bottom lip wobbled, and she bit it. This was what she was afraid of. The doctor’s face became blurry as tears formed in her eyes.

“There’s no way he can come back from this?” Cody said.

She suspected the answer already, but she mentally thanked him for asking the question she couldn’t right now.

“I’m afraid not.” Regret filled Dr. Ash’s voice. “The machines are the only thing keeping him alive. I’m sorry. Do you know if he was an organ donor?”

Maddy wiped her eyes. “No, we never discussed that.”

“Did Grant have a driver’s license or ID?” Jace asked.

“He didn’t have a license, but I think he had an ID.” She patted her sleeves over her cheeks “Why?”

“When you got your licenses, they asked you about organ donation,” Jace explained. “It should be on his ID if he wanted it.”

“Is his stuff here?” Maddy asked the doctor.

“I’ll get a nurse to bring it in.” He stood from the table. “If you have no more questions, I need to get prepped for surgery.”

Maddy stood and held out her hand. “As of right now, I don’t. Thank you for being so kind and understanding.”

He shook her hand. “It was my pleasure. And I’m sorry for your loss. I’ll have the nurse bring in his effects.”
