I sent Scott a text and explained my theory. I had him start looking into everyone at Maxwell Industries. I would research my company myself. I had no indication that Scott couldn’t be trusted, but in this situation, it was better to handle the delicate stuff alone.
How did we get here? Earlier today I was planning to seduce Delilah, and now I’m sitting in front of a computer setup reviewing every single employee’s financial records and social media to search for a mole. This was definitely the craziest day.
I started with Scott, since he was the closest to me and had the most security clearance. I didn’t want to believe that he could be compromised, but I couldn’t afford to take any chances.
I spent the next hour combing through Scott’s background. I checked every transaction, every post, every purchase. All I learned was that Scott donated half of his salary to cancer research in his grandmother’s name. He posted pictures of his cat and shared video game updates. There was nothing even remotely related to work. He didn’t even list his employer on any of his social media. He had to be the most loyal employee I’d ever had.
I moved onto the next name on my list and continued searching for several hours. I thought that Delilah was watching TV, so her voice next to me was startling.
“You need to eat. I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking at here, but it can wait.” She turned my face to look at her and brushed the hair over her shoulder. Her exposed neck called to me. I knew that I couldn’t bite her, though. Drinking from the vein was my preferred feeding method, but I didn’t trust myself not to hurt Delilah.
I shook my head and turned back to the computer. “I’ll get a bag in a little while. I need to focus on this.”
She grabbed my face and turned it toward her again. “You’re taking a break. Now.” She shoved me back from the desk and pulled me by both hands. I guess it was her turn to distract me.
I followed her over to the couch where she shoved me down and climbed on my lap. We had started kissing when my phone rang.
“Leave it. Unless it’s Viktor, there’s no reason to answer,” she ordered.
I glanced at the screen. Scott. I had to answer, even if it made Delilah mad. I shrugged apologetically as I pulled the phone closer and answered. “What did you find?”
“There are a few people who are questionable. I’m not through everything, but I figured you’d want to see the ones I’ve weeded out so far.” Scott had been with me since he’d been turned six years ago, and he knew exactly how I ran things.
“Send it all over. I’ll get to it in just a bit.” My tone was dismissive and I knew it. But it was hard to be focused with Delilah grinding on my lap. She must have decided that torturing me while I was on the phone was the perfect punishment.
“Um, boss?” Scott’s tone had changed and seemed apprehensive.
“What is it?” I wasn’t used to him sounding scared or nervous around me, even when I’d blown up at people.
“I know you have to check all of us out too, and that you’ll want to do it yourself. I just wanted you to know that I understand. I hope you don’t find anything though. I hate to think that any of our guys could be involved in whatever this is.” Since I knew that he wasn’t involved, I could relate to his feelings. I didn’t want it to be any of our guys either.
“Chances are, someone will be guilty of something. It’s only a matter of time before we figure out which people are involved. Keep working.” I disconnected the call without saying goodbye.
Delilah was glaring at me when I hung up the phone. “I know, but it was important. Scott may have a lead on whoever is responsible for blowing up Midnight.” Delilah froze. Her glare softened a bit and tears filled her eyes.
“It was my home, and now it’s gone. Why would anyone do that?” She started to break down, but I pulled her close and kissed her.
“We will figure it out. And we’ll rebuild. I promise. Even if I have to buy the building from Vik and do it myself.” I knew the promise was easier said than done, but I was determined to get rid of any reason our girl had to be sad. I couldn’t handle the tears. I knew that I would do anything to keep her from crying, even happy tears.
“Can we call the contractor and get him started?” Delilah had pulled up the number in her phone. “I’m sure Viktor won’t mind. If he ever answers his phone, we can tell him.”
I nodded and she dialed the contractor. He was a nice enough guy and didn’t mind that we’d given him the okay to restart construction instead of Vik. Especially when I had explained that I would be doubling the budget. He’d been in the neighborhood when the building had gone down and knew that Vik was inside.
“Yes, he’s fine. Resting and recovering,” I lied. “I’ve already let him know that we’re going ahead with the renovations and construction to rebuild. He’s on board, but with everything he’s been through, we thought it would be best for me to take over for a while.”
Convincing the human to gather his crew and start rebuilding Midnight again hadn’t been as difficult as I had expected. Perhaps Vik had said something to him when we’d agreed to share Delilah. It didn’t matter now. All that mattered was making sure Delilah was safe. I felt like her concern for Vik was rubbing off on me. I was starting to worry about his safety too.
At this point, I knew that she was right. I needed a break and so did she. I decided to take her for a drive. We got in the car and drove toward the city.
“So, food?” I asked, opening the car door for Delilah to climb in.
“Surprise me,” she said with a wink. My dick twitched at the innuendo. If she wasn’t careful, we’d end up back at my place with nothing to eat at all.
Every time we’d tried to be intimate, Vik had found a reason to interrupt. It was like he was paying me back for the one time I barged in on them. It didn’t matter that I’d apologized, so I decided if he could do it, so could I. I was dying to be inside her. If only the rest of the world would go away for a while.
Because of my rivalry with Vik, whenever she and I had alone time, I made sure Delilah was taken care of first. I knew that most likely I wouldn’t get to finish, but that was fine. There were some things that were worth waiting for, and Delilah was one of them. Once all of this mess with Midnight and the Powder operation was taken care of, there would be plenty of time for Delilah and me to get physical.
Since she’d opted for dinner to be a surprise, I decided to show her my favorite taco joint. It was less of a restaurant and more of a food truck that parked near my headquarters three times a week. I may or may not have paid them five grand a month with free parking for the privilege. The tacos were that good.
