“So what did you do yesterday?” he asks once we are alone on the terrace.

“Oh, nothing really,” I say, getting up to get more beer. I want to avoid any conversation pertaining to Nic.

“Really? So you didn’t spend the day with Nic?” he asks, following me inside.

“If you already know, why do you ask?” I say, glaring at him.

“I don’t think you should try to seduce her,” he says bluntly.

“I will seduce who I want, and I will thank you to stay out of my business,” I say, closing the fridge a little too forcefully. “How did you know anyway? Do you have us under surveillance or something?” I goad, wanting an excuse to fight him. Perhaps a good exchange of blows will help relieve some of my frustration and nerves.

“Nice try,” he says, seeing right through my ruse. “I’m not going to fight you, Lex. I know because Chuck mentioned it to me this morning in passing. He didn’t think it was a secret.”

TJ sits down on the couch in the living room, one leg crossed over the other, his arms spread wide on the headrest.

“You guys think it is a bad idea, but believe me, I know what I’m doing. It’s the only way to get her out of my system once and for all,” I say, sitting down next to him.

“The question you should be asking yourself is why you feel so strongly attracted to her,” TJ says, fixing me with a stare.

“Because she is an attractive woman. That’s all there is to it. Look, please let me handle this my way, alright?” I say, keeping my tone as even as possible.

He stares at me for a really long time. It is as if we are having a staring match. But he finally nods and gets up.

“Just promise me that you will be careful,” he says, looking over his shoulder just as he is about to step out of the door.

“I will,” I say solemnly.

Once he leaves, I sit down on the couch with a sigh. The patent leather couch is already sticky with the beer on my trousers from where I had sat before, but I could care less. I don’t know what I’m doing, and I don’t know how I could possibly be careful.

But I am single-mindedly determined to win Nic over.

Chapter 12 - Nic

When I step out of the building on to the curb on Tuesday morning, Chuck is waiting for me. Is Lex there too? My heart skips a beat. What is Chuck doing here?

“Miss Roberts, Mr. Hutchinson requests that you let me drive you to work,” Chuck says with a smile.

“What? Why? I can take the subway!”

Has this got something to do with trying to win me over? I am still conflicted about whether I want to date Lex or not.

“I know Miss Roberts, but since I’m already here, there’s no sense in me driving all the way back without you, is there? Not since we are both headed to the office?” Chuck says, holding the door open.

I sigh and get into the back of the car. In reality, I was dreading taking the subway after the experience I had last evening. I know I might probably be imagining it all, but somehow I don’t think I am. I think I was being watched. So having someone drive me to work in the safety of Lex’s Maybach is not the worst thing.

When we arrive at work, I head straight for Lex’s office. I’m done avoiding him. Besides, it would be rude not to thank him after he sent Chuck to pick me up. I also need to ask why he sent Chuck in the first place.

I knock on his door and peep in. He’s on the phone, but he tells me to come in.

I walk to the couch and sit on the edge, suddenly nervous. This is the first time I have been alone with Lex since our date.

“Nic?”

He has finished his phone call and is looking at me questioningly.

“Thank you for sending Chuck to fetch me. You didn’t have to,” I say, smiling weakly.

But instead of smiling back, he’s looking all serious.
