Page 116 of Darkest Deception

Not because I was a coward, but I feared she would walk the other way, and I would rather not use crude ways to keep her.

Remo advised me against it.

It’s crazy how fast Remo accepted my new mission, but I think what Aurora saw in that sleepover night has also made an impact on Remo. She definitely told him. It’s exactly what I wanted, and it played right into my hands.

After all, I was the one who’d orchestrated it all; the idea and the very reason Ambrose was invited to the Cainn mansion for the first time that night.

She doesn’t know what I am doing to keep us together, what I am doing to keep her life together, and yet she still speaks of giving up.

Clearly, I left some loose ends.

It’s time I clear those up.

“The Madden sisters. They need to go.”

Remo raises his brows at the names.

“I’m sure you know who they are. Do you have a plan in motion to keep this under wraps? You don’t think Ambrose will walk away once she finds out? She isn’t as forgiving as Aurora.”

I laugh, shaking my head. “There will be no one else for me like this. There is no second Ambrose.”

“That’s also correct.” He drops his fist on the table and taps his finger. The moment it hits the third tap, he will have a solution.

After all, isn’t this how we climbed to the top?

“Celebration party of Lanon’s new role as deputy leader in the Labour party?”

I nod at the location of the party.

Five minutes pass by and another tap on the desk from Remo.

Two minutes and the final tape echoes.

Remo looks right at me, our eyes clash, and we both smile.

He’s here with his wife.

“Target secured.”

Both Remo and I lift the champagne cups to our lips as we watch Mr Fox Madden, the very legend of the famous pharmaceutical in Britain.

The celebration party is held on the highest floor of the Shard. There are politicians present all around, the Labour party members, shareholders of Madden Pharmaceutical, and its investors. Of course Remo made it here. Didn’t he build half of these people in here? Money in their parties, acquiring islands, most wanted art pieces for the party members and the billions Remo has put into their elections will of course have them on his side. His investments in them are all worth it because here he stands, among the elites, the most prized people in the country, and despite their power and position, he is by far the most powerful.

Remo is the monster of the business world.

We wait until Fox is free, then Remo approaches him. He’s tall with white cropped hair, a good figure for his mid-sixties, a significant number of wrinkles on his face, and a little fluffy moustache. Kind of reminds me of Mace Torre, Ambrose’s father. Poor him. He left very early.

Thanks to yours truly.

Remo starts to murmur in his ear, Fox smiles and laughs, then Remo lets a small laugh slip, knowing how much he is deceiving him.

I let him do all the talking, knowing he is telling him that he should stay long here, that this party is going to be the talk of the town. Buttering him up in simple terms so that he gets wasted.

The new glass in Remo’s hand? It is drugged.

Remo hands him the glass, and Fox downs it all in one go. Remo nods and walks back towards me, standing in the shadows.

“Done. Get the fuck out of here now.”
