“I love you, June. You know that don’t you?”
“I know. I love you too.”
“You don’t have to say that, if you’re not ready to.”
“I’m ready. I’ve known for a while, but I didn’t trust myself.”
“You can trust this, trust us,” I tell her.
“I know I can. You’ve shown me that, even in this short amount of time we’ve been together-together, but it’s more than that. It’s the coffee, it’s waiting for me at the bus stop. It’s showing up when I didn’t even know I needed you. I love you; I have for a while.”
“I love you too, baby.” I lean down and kiss her. “So you’ll marry me?”
“What?” she asks as I pull the ring out of my pocket. I’ve been carrying it around with me since I bought it, waiting for the right time. Now is the right time.
“Marry me. I’ll make you so fucking happy for the rest of our lives.” She pauses and then smiles at me.
“Yes. I’ll marry you.”
“Thank fuck,” I say, kissing her again.
Our kiss turns feral, and I’m stripping her naked. She’s already wet for me, so I waste no time in getting naked and slamming into her right on the floor in my living room.
This is how it will always be with us.
In love. Together forever.
EPILOGUE
JUNE
ONE YEAR LATER
Finding my parents was not something I ever thought would happen, and their being the president and the first lady wouldn’t have been on my mind either. Admittedly, it took me a long time to come to terms with it. We’re family now. Family. I went from having no one to having so much love that I don’t know what to do with myself.
Owen has made me so happy. I can’t even begin to explain that either. I never thought I’d fall in love. I don’t think I thought it was real. He made me see how wrong I was. We got married a few months after he asked me. I literally couldn’t wait to be his wife.
I’ve been working on my mother’s staff because, apparently, the first lady needs a staff. Who knew? I love my work, but I don’t like politics at all.
I’ve been so busy at work that I didn’t realize I missed my period until this morning when I Exorcist puked all over the bathroom in the Residence. Mom was the one who mentioned pregnancy and happened to have an entire cabinet full of tests. That plus sign popped up so fast. My head is still spinning. I hugged my Mom and left. So much is going through my head.
I came home early after confirming the test at my doctor’s office.
When Owen finally comes in at six, I am chomping at the bit to tell him our news. With as much sex as we have, I’m surprised it took this long to get pregnant, but we did get a lot of time, just the two of us.
“What’s up, baby?” he asks after kissing me.
“I’m pregnant!” I blurt, unable to keep the news to myself any longer. The grin that breaks out on his face makes my heart soar.
He wraps me up in his arms and spins me around.
“Thank you for giving me everything, June. You have no idea how much I love you.”
“I have some idea because I love you so much more than I ever thought possible, Owen.”
Family is everything, but Owen is my heart. Always.
