“Why the hell not?” he snapped. “She’s good at her job, knows you well, and knows what people respond to. There won’t be any of this wasting time getting to know you bullshit, either. She can jump straight in, find what will work best to rehab your image, and we can keep working. That’s all that matters now.” He jerked a thumb toward the closed door between us and the staff. “You and I will be fine if this goes under. It would be a bitch for the people out there who rely on a paycheck from us.”

“You don’t need to rub salt in the wound,” I muttered, staring at him until he looked away. “I’ll call Sienna.”

“I’ll give you some privacy.” In other words, he expected me to get on the phone immediately, leaving me alone to handle convincing Sienna Black into saving my ass.

“I’ll be civil in front of our families, but otherwise? I wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire.” It had been years since she’d snarled that at me. It was a stupid prank. One I was sure she’d forgotten about. But no. She was determined to hate me for the rest of our lives.

Max had a point, though. She was a star in the PR world, and I needed help immediately—no time for interviews or any of that shit. I reminded myself of that while pulling up her contact and placing a call I knew I’d regret.

She didn’t keep me waiting. “Noah Goldsmith.” Her voice dripped smug superiority. “Tell me you’re not calling for the reason I think.”

“You’ve heard,” I stated, already on my way to the bar in the corner. There wasn’t enough whiskey in the bottle to combat this.

“I’ve heard,” she confirmed with a snide laugh. “And you’re out of your goddamn mind if you think I’d lift a finger to help you get out of your mess.”
