“Okay,” she said with a sage nod. “If you say so.”
“I know so.” I leaned forward and kissed her quickly.
Katie gave a little gasp and I felt pretty good that such a small peck to the lips could affect her. We watched each other carefully for a few seconds before Katie started to move around in her seat. I held tighter to her hand, not wanting her to even think about moving further up the couch.
After a few moments of silence, except for the sound of our breathing, Katie restarted the conversation and I had to admit, I was a little disappointed.
“Carry on then,” she said, before chewing on the corner of her bottom lip. “Tell me about what happened when you fell into living with someone.”
I shrugged. “Not much to tell. We’d been together a couple of years or so and then my dad died and Cherry hinted at wanting to get married and have kids. I was forty-one-years-old and thought maybe she was right, maybe it was time for me to settle down, but when it came to it I knew she wasn’t the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”
Katie started to scratch at the fabric of her pants with her free hand, seeing as I still hadn’t let go of the other one and had no intention to.
“Are you still in contact with her?” she asked, concentrating on her finger and pants.
“Nope.” I tugged on her hand to get her to look at me. “She died in an accident just before I came to the UK.”
“Oh my God,” she gasped. “I’m so sorry. That’s awful.”
Katie’s hand reached to trail her soft finger tips up and down my bicep and it felt real good. It was warm and delicate and I couldn’t help but wonder what her touch would feel like all over my body.
“We weren’t together, darlin’,” I replied. “We hadn’t been for two years.”
“Even so,” she said softly. “It must still have been a shock.”
I nodded. “Yeah it was. We’d had a drink together and she thought we were going to get back to how things had been, but it was never going to happen.”
“Why did she think that?” Katie’s hand dropped back to her thigh. “Had you done something to make her think that?”
“Nope. No way. It was a drink, that was all. I don’t do that Katie Cat. I don’t give women the wrong impression – it ain’t me, darlin’.”
Katie looked at me through her bangs and nodded. I reached forward and gently pulled her lip from between her teeth with my thumb.
“There’s that over thinking again,” I said.
“I’m sorry.” She cringed and blew out her cheeks. “I’m such a dick head at times. I can’t help it, but I promise that I’ll try to chill.”
“Chill? You been spending time with Isaac and his buddies?”
We both grinned at each other and the atmosphere was suddenly back to being relaxed – we were chill.
“I am extremely young at heart,” Katie quipped.
She pulled her hand from mine and tucked her hair behind her ear. Even her ears were damn sexy with the tiny little diamond studs in them. I felt my dick stir as I thought about pulling the lobe of one between my teeth and then sucking on it.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked. “Have I got a bogey hanging out of my nose?”
Her hand went to her nose, wiping at it. She then held it up and studied it.
“What the hell are you doing?” I asked on a laugh.
“Checking for bogeys,” she said with a tone that said I was an idiot.
Leaning forward, I grabbed her hand and pulled her to me. We were inches apart and I could feel her breath on my cheek. Its smell was a mixture of mint and beer. That, along with her deep pink lips, made me crazy.
“Shit, I really need to kiss you,” I whispered.
“I think I really need you to.”
