“You’re welcome,” she whispered.
“Did Hannah show you the bracelet I got her as a souvenir?”
Ellie nodded. “Yes, it’s very pretty.”
“Well, I’m glad you think so because I got you one too.”
“You did?”
“Of course. I missed you too while I was gone. Besides, I figured my two best girls should have matching bracelets since they’re basically twins.” Ellie gasped as I pulled the delicate chain out of my pocket and clasped it around her wrist. The porchlight lit up her emerald-colored eyes as they moved from her wrist to my face.
“Thank you.” My breath caught as her tiny arms wrapped around me and she whispered in my ear. “I’m glad you came back.”
My eyes filled with tears as I hugged her to me, kissing the side of her head. “I’ll always come back,” I choked out.
Over her shoulder, my eyes landed on Ford. “Thank you,” he mouthed, wiping at his own eyes.
Hannah ran inside as they backed out of the driveway, but I stood on the porch until I could no longer see their taillights. No matter how hard I tried to fight it, lines were definitely starting to blur. One question plagued me as I headed back inside, refusing to be silenced. How could I protect my heart when I’d already given it away, not only to Ford, but to Ellie as well?
