“Good, thanks. Work’s been crazy, but I suppose you know how that is,” he said with a grin.

“I sure do. I think that boss of mine likes to keep us busy so we don’t get in trouble,” I teased.

“That’s because your boss is smart, and he knows what troublemakers you all are,” Micah joked, making me and Landon laugh. “Speaking of which, you’d better get going, I set up a meeting with your new client for ten o’clock. Here’s the file with all the information I have so far. The address for his campaign headquarters is on the front. That’s where you’re supposed to meet. Again, I’m sorry this is so rushed.” Micah picked up a manila file from the table and handed it to me.

“No problem. I’ll take care of it,” I assured him as I took the file. I glanced down at my watch and saw I was going to have to hurry if I didn’t want to be late.

After saying a quick goodbye to them and then to Mary, I headed out to the parking lot and climbed in my truck. I punched the address into my navigation system then pulled out onto the road. Normally, the drive would’ve taken ten minutes, but with the busy Monday morning traffic, it ended up taking twenty and I arrived with only two minutes to spare.

Scooping the file off the passenger seat, I got out and made my way across the parking lot to where a large, one-story, white brick building sat. Ingrained in me from my time in the Marines, my eyes scanned my surroundings, taking note of the types of cars in the lot, the number of entry points on that side of the building and the lack of exterior security cameras.

I frowned as I got closer and peered at the front door, hoping to see some sort of swipe system that would prevent just anyone from walking in. Finding none, I looked over at the large picture window to the left, wondering if there was at least someone keeping an eye on things, but my steps faltered at what I saw instead.

I stared in disbelief at a large colorful poster hanging in the window. On it were the words, Elect Christopher Brooks for Governor, but it wasn’t just the words that had my heart hammering in my chest and a cold feeling of dread landing in the pit of my stomach; it was the picture of the man that accompanied the words. The man was handsome and smiling with light brown hair and eyes the color of the Caribbean Sea. The same blue-green eyes that I’d fallen in love with as a boy. The same eyes that had haunted my dreams after he’d shattered my heart into a million pieces.
