“You won’t be able to hear me, though. I can’t risk Cohen seeing the earpiece while you’re chatting. It’ll blow everything.”

Nodding, I smoothed down the front of my deep plum blouse, hoping the billowy fabric hid the wire well. I slipped on my black suit jacket over the top, and as far as I could tell, the illusion was complete.

“So? Good?”

Pietor raked his stare across me, his eyes traveling down my shoulders to my feet. I felt heated beneath his stare, but there was no denying the apprehension that gnawed at me with my “one-on-one” with Nicholas just around the corner.

He nodded before walking up to me and grabbing my open jacket. I wasn’t sure what he was going to do at first, but then his large, surprisingly dextrous fingers just buttoned up my garment.

“Perfect. I can’t see the wire, and you look like you would be going into the office for a typical meeting.” He smirked, a low snicker escaping him. “Makes me think of meeting you for the first time.”

My cheeks warmed as I remembered that day, too, thinking about how I’d wanted him to throw me down on that desk and fuck me right there.

“Wow,” I shook my head. That feels like years ago.… I was so flustered because of your relentless flirting.”

“You hid it well enough. I’ll give you that.” He wrapped his arms around my waist. “And you didn’t give in. Really put a wrench in my plans.”

I smiled. “Well, I have to say I’m glad about that. If I’d just let you fuck me and dropped the case, we wouldn’t have the information we do now. I’d still be content to work for Nicholas, thinking he was just a jerk but just like any other boss.”

Pietor cocked his pierced brow, grinning as he stared down at me.

“So, no regrets, then?”

I shook my head. “No. I’m right where I’m supposed to be.”

Nodding, Pietor kissed me firmly before stepping back. “Damn straight you are. Now…”

He made sure that his duffle was fully loaded before holding out his hand toward me. I took it, stepping up to him with my heart furiously pounding behind my ribs.

Pietor met my eyes. “Let’s go.”

It took me ages to get to the office. However, in reality, it was the usual twenty or so minutes. It felt like the first time I’d gone to court. I was desperate for the whole experience to be over while also wanting to be extremely present for it.

Pietor dropped me off at the building next door, keeping his black SUV out of sight from the external cameras that I’d warned him about.

“I’ll hear you. The second that anything sounds off, I’ll be there in a blink. You know that.”

I smiled weakly, nodding as I unfastened my seat belt and reached for the handle. “I do,” I said.

Pietor yanked me back toward him when I was about to step outside, and his lips crashed into mine for a furious kiss. I melted into it, part of me wanting to stay there like that forever.

When he pulled back, Pietor cupped my face, touching his forehead to mine. “You got this.”

I nodded against him. “I know, and I’ve got the best backup possible.”

Leaning back, I squeezed Pietor’s hand, and he smiled at me.

“Get it done. I want you back home in our bed.”

My heart squeezed, but I didn’t let it distract me. I felt bolstered enough to do this but needed to remain focused. Offering Pietor another smile and a nod, I exited the vehicle. I flattened down my jacket as I stood on the curb.

Looking back at him, I let everything words couldn’t say fill my stare. “I’ll see you soon.”

“No time at all, love. I promise you.”

With that, I turned toward my office building and started walking. Every step felt like a dagger to my brain, the fears and doubt punching me as my feet struck the asphalt.
