When I made no noise, one of the tendrils that had wrapped around my stomach shifted. It slithered lower, and I squealed in shock when its tip grazed my slit.

“Rune!” I pleaded, but once again the sound came out choked and undecipherable.

“Oh, Little Flame,” he sighed. “If you won’t admit to me you’re mine to torment and fuck and play with however I see fit, then I’m forced to show you. Something tells me it won’t take long for you to feel the truth inside of you.”

My cries of protest came out louder now, his double entendre made clear as soon as his shadow reached my opening.

No. No way. Rune was not about to fuck me with his?—

I gasped, the fight leaving me as soon as the cool shadow impaled me, filling me up and angling to hit a spot that drove aching pleasure up through my body. It was the strangest sensation, cool and smooth like stone or glass but slightly softer like flesh.

I stopped trying to analyze what the fuck was happening as soon as Rune started sucking my clit again. The shadow expanded slowly, continuing to pump and hit the sensitive nerves just inside of me.

Moaning or screaming now, I wasn’t sure. Music swelled, a piano melody ricocheting off the walls with my cries, the lights and swirls of multicolored galaxies shimmering and bathing us in a soft glow.

I closed my eyes, my body melting into formless pleasure. The only thing that existed were the building waves of rapture, the fear and mortification only driving me higher into the clouds, the shame so sinful it had become divine.

In that moment, I believed I was Rune’s toy. He played with me like I belonged to him, as if belonging to him was my only purpose and always had been. I let go, barely aware of the fact that my gag had fallen away.

“Please,” I begged. “Please, may I come? Please.”

When Rune slowed, I knew without him asking what he wanted from me. What he demanded from me.

“I’m yours,” I said.

I was lost, just a drop in Rune’s ocean of desire—this flood of need he’d stirred in my depths that I never thought I’d feel. He had me split open and primed for any manipulation imaginable, my only opponent who’d ever won the match. Maybe the only one who would’ve ever been capable of it.

“I belong to you, Rune.”

It was a desperate beg, a feeling untethered to logic or reason. They were not words I’d wanted to say, wanted him to hear. He had to understand that this was just what people said in the heat of the moment. I didn’t really?—

“Come.”

The shadow pulsed furiously, hitting that spot over and over until I was a writhing mess, in tune with Rune’s sucking. He lifted my ass as he consumed me. At the graze of his fangs, I exploded on his tongue, riding wave after wave as he held me still. My muscles strained and shook, the fire in my blood churning out molten pleasure that surged and soared. Rune’s depraved shadows squeezed out every last drop of my release.

My eyes had rolled back. My lower lip stung from how hard I’d bit it at some point. I had no idea when I’d been released, when the shadow appendage had slid out of me, and when Rune had scooped me into his arms.

All I knew was that I was in a blissful state of thoughtlessness, where nothing existed but Rune’s steady heartbeat against my eardrums.

SCARLETT

Ilay with Rune under the stars, listening to music for what felt like both an eternity and the briefest moment. Each time he arose to change the sphere, his absence by my side was a cold void.

This greatly concerned me.

“Stay here with me,” Rune said, after laying back down beside me and pulling me back into his arms.

“You couldn’t pay me to leave this room,” I murmured dreamily, not quite understanding what he meant.

He gently dragged me up so that we sat facing each other. “I mean, stay here, in this castle with me.”

My brows shot up. He couldn’t be serious. Dread and panic flooded my veins, parsing through the reality of this situation and fearing the worst. Maybe this was the grand play all along. Maybe he really did think of me as merely a pet, something to control utterly and completely.

“Scarlett,” he said softly, bringing my eyes back to his. “Now that we are involved, you are no longer safe. Our entanglement cannot remain a secret from the born forever.”

My anger and fear halted for a moment at the raw guilt in Rune’s features. Was it genuine? Or was this a part of his game?
