If I had to take a guess, he was probably feeling just as betrayed as Liam was right now.

Liam sighed and came around the chair to help me up. “Sorry about the fingernails.”

Dane gave him a little smirk and it looked just like Liam’s. “How can I be mad when you did exactly what I taught you to do?”

I rolled my eyes, annoyed that being this deranged seemed to be a genetic trait. “Can you please get him some medical attention already? His fingers are starting to rot.”

Turning on my heel, I left the murder basement, ignoring Dane’s question about what I was talking about as I forced myself not to run.

Excitement was buzzing in my veins and I wanted to run straight to the Valor estate so we could question Melinda next.

After everything Dane had told us, she was once again the number one suspect.

CHAPTER 4

Cas

Three days of this bullshit and Lucy finished it in less than thirty minutes. I ran my hand over the top of my hair as I followed her up the stairs into the office, trying to sort through my feelings before they leaked through the bond to bother her.

Lucy tossed her phone on the new desk I’d ordered, nothing on it yet other than her laptop but there would be soon thanks to all the random shopping I’d done while keeping an eye on Liam.

She crossed her arms over her chest and leaned against the desk, eyes narrowed as she waited for Liam and Frankie to make their way up.

Pizza was already on the way and should be here soon, but Lucy was still too irritated to eat and I didn’t know how I’d missed it. It shouldn’t be possible for an omega to hide their emotions from their alpha, but…

Maybe I’d been too distracted.

For the first time in my life I was torn. I had an omega to take care of, but she wasn’t like any omega I’d ever met before. She wasn’t someone who needed my protection the same way an omega like River Steele might.

Lucy wanted my protection, but she didn’t need it.

Clearly.

She wouldn’t even look at me as she tapped her nails on her arm.

Frankie came up the stairs first, the mask still over her nose and mouth. Her bright blue eyes were sparkling as she studied the distance between me and Lucy, but she didn’t take the mask off to gloat either.

Shocking honestly, considering her personality.

“Did you order the pizza?” Liam asked as he came up the stairs, closing the Murphy door behind him.

I nodded. “I texted Nathan too. He should be here in about ten minutes to take a look at Dane.”

Liam sighed and looked down at his blood-covered hands, blinking like he just now realized he’d been smearing it everywhere. I knew exactly what he was feeling even without an established bond because I was just as numb.

Never in a million years would I have thought Gideon would leave the Valor pack.

“Are you finally ready to hear my report?” Lucy demanded.

I bit back a sigh when I felt a pulse of anger through the bond. She wasn’t done being mad at him and I had to decide how I was going to handle this before things got out of hand.

I stood in the center of the office, between Lucy and Liam. My body was blocking the door to the rest of the house, and I had enough room to step in between them but I wasn’t exactly feeling reassured.

Frankie cleared her throat and held up a hand before Liam could respond, seeing the same spark in his eyes. It was a warning to us all that trouble was on the horizon. “Before you give him your report, I want to let you know my assessment of that interrogation based on everything we’ve found so far. Then I’m going to head back to Lopez compound because whatever this is between you…it’s none of my fucking business.”

Lucy slid that glare over to Frankie but the female alpha didn’t seem the least bit bothered by it. “Go ahead.”

“My father is going with me to meet with Randolph and River Steele,” Frankie told Lucy. “I’ll see what I can learn about the deal with Valor then. They’re bound to be looking for some kind of solution for their problems now that their point of contact is dead.”
