“What did you decide, pumpkin?” Francisco asked, giving her a warm, reassuring smile.

Lucy folded her hands on top of the table and looked at Frankie, ignoring the other alphas at the table. “I decided to give you back the rights to his life.”

“Oh?” Francisco sounded genuinely curious and playful, but we all knew this was only for Lucy and Frankie. No one else except his omega had the privilege of his affection. “Why did you decide that?”

Cas was back in record time, dragging Arturo into the room by the rope around his neck. He tossed the ruined alpha at Shiloh’s feet and then went back to his chair like the smell of blood wasn’t thick enough to choke on.

No one looked over at him, not even when Arturo started moaning and whining about whatever he thought he could get away with.

I kept my eyes on my mother, who stared at Francisco like he’d lost his mind.

“Your son had his dog ask me what I’d do if I found out he had my heir in his basement.” Francisco gave my mother a very unpleasant smile. “I told him it was up to my daughter since she was the one he wronged. Either way, Arturo is no longer my heir, or a Lopez. So, I’m curious why our vicious little omega would give him back to me.”

“Public humiliation is far more degrading than dying in a dark hole where no one will know what he’s done or why he disappeared.” Lucy finally turned to Francisco, and I grinned when I saw the cruel look in her eyes. “You were the one who allowed him to become like this so it’s your responsibility to clean up your mess. Not mine.”

Frankie snickered and so did I when my mother looked absolutely scandalized.

Lucy gave Francisco the cruel smile I’d been waiting my whole life to see again. “Show the whole world what kind of alpha you’re willing to accept. Show them what kind of alpha you want to be, Francisco Lopez.”

CHAPTER 29

Liam

My dick has never been this fucking hard. I wanted her more than I wanted air. God, how did I get so lucky?

Francisco considered Lucy’s words and it was obvious just how proud he was of her for her choice. “You’re right. It is my responsibility to foster the kind of alpha I want representing my name. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to correct my mistake.”

Okay, maybe I did like him.

Yeah, he’d hidden Lucy away from me, but Francisco hadn’t ruined my omega. He’d only made her stronger. For that, I would forgive his lies.

“There will be no consequences for what was done before he was brought back into my care,” Francisco told my mother, his tone shifting to the one I was familiar with – strictly business. “I’ve already made a statement, signed it, and had it notarized so you have evidence and will believe me when I say I won’t go back on my word.”

Peter, his beta assistant, pulled a piece of paper out of a leather portfolio and slid it across the table to my mother’s assistant, Warren, but she didn’t take it from him. No, my mother was staring at Francisco like he’d grown two heads.

“Before we end this meeting, I would like to know how you plan to handle the bond your son gave my daughter.”

Lucy winced and I grabbed her chair, yanking it closer and settling my hand on the back of her neck so she wouldn’t freak out and make me lose my goddamn mind in a room full of legacy alphas.

“Your daughter is an alpha.” My mother raised an eyebrow at Francisco.

“Lucy may not bear the Lopez name, but she is my daughter.” Francisco’s growl was a warning and I couldn’t wait to see what my mother would do now. “She chose Liam to be one of her alphas and I will support that choice. With violence if I have to.”

Frankie snickered again and Cas’s eyes actually twinkled.

My mother looked at me before settling her gaze on Lucy again, and I felt my entire body stiffen. I didn’t know what she was going to do or say, but I was very fucking sure I wasn’t going to like it.

“I would like to be honest about my concerns, Ms. Parker. Would that be all right with you?”

“Go ahead, Valor.”

Cas and I shared a look. There was no fear through the bond, but there was something and I had no idea what it was. It didn’t feel familiar at all and that made me even more apprehensive.

“As you said during that phone call, you don’t want to live in the spotlight. I assume that’s why Lopez never officially adopted you. But you’re very smart. You have to know it won’t matter if Liam leaves Valor. The world will always be watching him.”

Shit, I should have expected this. I knew she was playing with us, but I can’t believe she waited to get Lucy’s permission before starting the game.

“I’m aware,” Lucy said, still looking so calm and unbothered I felt ridiculous for wanting to drag her ass out of here before my mother could finish spewing whatever nonsense she had planned.
