Cas pulled me toward the car, but I yanked back and looked up at Liam, who was three seconds away from tearing them all apart. I tugged on his coat and Liam looked down at me, eyes flashing.
I tried to soothe him through our bond, reminding him I was his. It didn’t matter what they said anymore. We were bonded.
“Lucy is my omega,” Liam declared, eyes on me and no one else. “And Cassius thinks she’s pretty amazing.”
Their answering questions were a roar but it all faded away when Liam gave me a little half-smile, and I could feel just how embarrassed he was by all the attention.
“Mr. Valor, why do they keep asking you to come down to the police station?” one of the reporters asked. “Do they suspect you killed your own brother? Do they have any evidence for their arrest on the night he died, or was it because you’re going to be the new heir to Valor?”
Liam snarled, turning toward the reporter like he was going to rip their tongue from their mouth right here in front of all these people.
Every single one of them scrambled back, finally sensing just how dangerous he was but it was too late. They’d asked him the one question that was guaranteed to push him over the edge and Liam didn’t have the same level of control Cas did.
I shoved my tea at Cas and stepped in front of Liam, hands on his chest like I could actually do something to hold him back despite the difference in our strength. My nails dug into his chest and I hoped to fuck this would work.
Liam grabbed my arm like he was going to push me out of his way, so I snarled at him, just loud enough to cut through all the noise.
He looked down at me with wide eyes, not quite sure he’d heard me.
“Let’s go.” I grabbed his hand and pulled him through the crowd toward his stupid flamboyant car. “Blood doesn’t really pair well with a chai tea latte, does it? So take me home already.”
His genuine laugh disturbed the paparazzi more than his threatening growl had and Cas smirked at me when he reached the passenger side door first.
We got in the car before someone else could say something stupid to ruin all my hard work and Cas handed me my tea through the window before getting on his motorcycle.
I’d really hoped we’d have a little more time, but I should consider myself lucky that we had as much as we did.
Whether it was the barista or one of the patrons, it didn’t matter. This was going to happen at some point or another. I just wish it hadn’t been when we were at the café Gideon used to frequent, gathering evidence.
This was definitely going to make my job a thousand times harder than it already was.
CHAPTER 17
Liam
I don’t know how I made it back to the house without getting pulled over for reckless driving or getting yelled at by Lucy. She was so fucking calm as she sipped on her chai tea latte, too, gripping the handle on the roof with more strength and poise than I’d given her credit for.
Knowing she was strong and seeing it firsthand were two very different things.
And she wasn’t just physically strong, but mentally. Far more than me, that was for damn sure. If she hadn’t stopped me when she did…
I’d known she could handle herself physically, but I’d been scared to death this kind of thing would make her reconsider everything. Bonds weren’t easily broken, but it could be done.
Especially when they were so new.
I pulled into the garage with Frankie and Cas right behind me. The only reason I didn’t feel like I was about to lose control at any moment was because Lucy was just so fucking calm. I could even feel it through the bond and I had no idea how she was doing it.
All the panic and fear she’d felt when she first came out of the back room of the café were gone like they had never existed to begin with. There wasn’t even a lingering trace of anxiety and I knew then Cas was right.
Her control over her instincts and pheromones was definitely better than mine.
I got out of the car and made my way around to the passenger side, grateful she didn’t try to get out on her own.
Lucy might not have been born into a legacy pack, but she knew how to deal with alphas better than anyone I’d ever met before. She even gave the infamous ‘perfect omega’ a run for her money.
My perfect omega looked up when I opened her door and nonchalantly sipped on her chai tea latte, studying me like she was waiting for me to fall apart.
Maybe if I didn’t have her, I would.
