I could understand why Helen would kidnap Melinda, but me? Was it because I was the one looking for proof that she’d murdered Gideon, or was it something else?
The way she quietly watched me take in my surroundings was unnerving but I wasn’t going to waste this opportunity either. I’d figure out why she kidnapped us eventually. People like her always liked to talk if they did shit like this.
Otherwise, she would have just killed us back at the legacy event.
I couldn’t see much though thanks to how dark the unfinished room we were in was. There was only a single light that construction workers used to see by. It made the space look small and erased any details I might use to figure out how to escape.
Considering how skilled the Tinley pack was at hunting, I had to be careful. They’d used rope to tie us to the pillar as well as to tie our wrists together. It was tight and secure without an inch of give. I didn’t think the knots would loosen either.
I had to get free though. I couldn’t just sit here and let them do whatever it was they had planned, but I didn’t know where we were or what they wanted.
My only saving grace was they hadn’t searched me. I was still wearing all my jewelry and my boots. My tights were ripped and my hair was pulled out of the updo I’d had it in, but otherwise, nothing else was different.
I could feel the weight of the knife in my boot and the earrings in my ears. I’d set one of them to record before getting in the limo since this was my first legacy event and I’d wanted to make sure we recorded River’s agreement. The earring next to it was a tracker – the same one Frankie wore.
Even still, I wasn’t exactly feeling reassured.
Tugging on the bond to see where my alphas were, I froze – my entire body going cold when I realized I couldn’t feel them at all. I reached up for my bond marks, hands shaking. Were they already dead?
“They’re still alive,” Helen murmured.
I looked up to see her grey eyes twinkling and horror filled me. Gut-wrenching dread warned me that they wouldn’t be alive for much longer.
“Couldn’t kill them yet,” she told me. “It wouldn’t be as painful, you see.”
She waved her hand to indicate Melinda and I.
Time. I needed to buy us time.
I had to trust my alphas. They were both insanely stubborn and difficult to kill. I had to trust that whatever she had planned wouldn’t deter them for long.
All I had to do was buy us a little time.
“What exactly do you mean by that?” I dropped my hands to my lap, the tips of my fingers brushing against the top of my boot.
Her gentle smile made me shudder. “It wouldn’t be as cruel or as painful if your alphas died without getting to experience what it was like to feel the person they love most in the world die first.”
Maybe that confession should have scared me even more, but all it did was confirm my suspicions. Helen wasn’t looking to make just Gideon suffer. She was looking to punish his whole family for what he’d done.
Liam wasn’t going to die next because she wanted him to feel me die just as she’d felt her baby die. I pitied her for that experience, but now it was affecting me and I had nothing to do with any of that.
I was scared, but more than anything, I was pissed. “I guess you should have killed yourself first then.”
The way her expression shifted gave me the chills. It reminded me too much of Arturo. “Why would I do that?”
I rolled my eyes and leaned back against the pillar. “Because Gideon loved you more than anyone else. The rest of us have nothing to do with it.”
Helen was quiet for a long time and the two alphas behind her shifted uncomfortably. I glanced up at them, assessing their body language and determination. They were big but not that big. I’ve seen bigger betas. They’d be strong though and they clearly believed omegas were capable of more than everyone assumed, otherwise they wouldn’t be answering to Helen.
I had to be careful. This pack believed in training an omega how to hunt – how to infiltrate and spy better than anyone. They’d trained her to use her designation to her advantage and I didn’t think she was the only omega in their pack trained like that.
The second I got free, I had to take them out first. Helen may be more dangerous, but she was emotional. She was the one who had stakes in the game. These two were just following orders, but they were still alphas.
If I let them get their hands on me, I was dead.
Helen’s expression shifted again, going back to that warm smile and it creeped me the fuck out. “How are you feeling?”
“Like shit. Why?”
