“For better or worse, your brother is dead,” he told me. “You don’t have to make yourself smaller anymore.”
I didn’t like how that sounded at all, but…I don’t think he was wrong either.
Whether I realized it or not, I’ve been making a lot of concessions so my brother could have the spotlight that was rightfully his. I was afraid I’d lose him if I took any more than I already have and yet, I lost him anyway.
“But I don’t think there was a right choice when it came to Gideon,” Cas told me. “He was going to give up his position to Dane instead of you. That doesn’t make any sense.”
Despite Dane’s explanation, Cas was right.
Why would my brother choose Dane over me, even when I showed no interest in taking over Valor? He had to have known that would cause problems down the road.
I would have taken over the pack just to have the power to find him. Had he thought that far ahead?
Doubtful.
Gideon didn’t tell Dane he wasn’t planning to leave anymore either. I had no idea what that meant. Maybe he was hoping Melinda would leave him first.
“What do you want Liam?” Cas pulled back and searched my face, looking for a problem he could fix.
His blue eyes were so bright, and I could see a bit of the red neon in them, making them look almost purple. They sparkled with tears he refused to shed, and I didn’t understand how I’d gotten so lucky.
This insanely powerful alpha was about to cry. For me.
Was this how Lucy felt when she saw me crying? If it was…I could understand why she decided to forgive me.
“Tell me what you want,” Cas demanded. “It’s my job to make it happen, remember?”
How could I possibly forget when he kept reminding me.
“I want to keep Lucy safe,” I told him. “And I don’t care what I have to do to make that happen, but I don’t want to do it alone.”
“Okay…” Cas released my hair and ruffled the top until it was the way he liked it. “Fine. You win, Liam. You can use my name for your legacy.”
My eyes widened and I stared at him in disbelief. I’d planned to use it whether he wanted me to or not, but I never expected him to give me his blessing. “Really?”
“Yeah, really.” He took my face in his hands, looking like he was about to freak the fuck out and that was my fault too.
Cas was my rock, but I was his mountain.
If I fell apart, he would end up crushed.
CHAPTER 36
Liam
I wanted to apologize, but that wasn’t what Cas needed so I kept my mouth shut and waited for him to figure out what it was he was going to ask for in return.
“What happens after you make a new legacy?” he asked, still looking for an answer as he searched my eyes like he could read them as easily as he could a book. “What do we do after that?”
I placed my hand over his heart, taking in just how fast and hard it was beating since I couldn’t feel his emotions. Cas was doing his best not to lose it and I forced myself to find the answer he needed.
This was the kind of alpha I wanted to be.
I wanted a partner I could rely on. One who could rely on me. I wanted us to be the offense and defense in a war that kept trying to take what we loved most from us simply because we had the power and strength that they didn’t.
Acheron was a city founded with four legacy packs. They were the originals. The ones who had the most power and strength whether it was in people or money…it didn’t matter. They were above the rest.
Other legacy alphas born outside those four packs were adopted if possible, but if they refused to leave their current pack, they became a new legacy – one that was either crushed by the original four, or left to limp along by making alliances and swearing allegiance to one of the four.
