A secret phone for a secret relationship.

I hated this kind of shit, but I wouldn’t be so upset if it hadn’t gotten my brother killed.

“That makes sense when we compare it to his messages,” Lucy agreed. “Six months ago she told him she was pregnant and he promised he’d divorce Melinda.”

“They started planning a whole new life together in that house he bought,” Frankie muttered. “But three months later, Melinda told him she was also pregnant.”

This was insane. I couldn’t even wrap my head around what happened despite seeing the proof with my own fucking eyes. “And my brother was so sure Melinda’s baby was his that he told Helen he couldn’t leave her.”

That must have been what set all this off.

“If we compare all the messages and the date of her miscarriage…” Lucy hesitated and looked up at me with worry in her eyes.

I hated that I couldn’t reassure her.

“Well, Helen blamed Gideon for her miscarriage and she kept messaging Dane for info on him even after she lost the baby,” Frankie said as she read over Lucy’s shoulder. “They kept seeing each other, but the messages keep getting nastier and nastier.”

Cas leaned against his desk as he watched us. He had more presence than he usually did and I could feel his eyes on me even if I couldn’t see them.

He could sense what Lucy was too distracted to notice, but for once, he didn’t call me out on it.

For the first time in my life, the weight of his attention felt smothering, but I didn’t dare move. If I even so much as took a slightly deeper breath, Lucy would notice and I couldn’t let that happen yet. I was too close to losing my shit and the last thing I wanted was to hurt her.

I tried to focus on the bond marks on her neck but it wasn’t helping when she was so far away, so I shifted my attention to her lips and suddenly every word she spoke felt like it was being shouted at me.

Lucy pointed to one of the messages. “Look, when we go back to the day he told her he couldn’t leave Melinda, he offered to bring her into the Valor pack anyways.”

“What I don’t understand is how he thought he could bring Helen Tinley into the pack after everything she’s been doing,” Cas stated with enough irritation in his voice my gaze slid to his.

He looked…concerned.

“Gideon didn’t seem to know about the information Helen was sending to the Tinley pack either,” Lucy explained. “It wasn’t in any of their messages, but he did try to buy her off after they lost the baby.”

I couldn’t believe my brother would do something so fucking repulsive.

“How was Gideon going to explain another omega to Melinda?” Frankie demanded.

“It was never going to work out.” Cas kept his eyes on mine as he helped carry the conversation that I could no longer force myself to be a part of. “Two omegas with one alpha? Unless Helen and Melinda were also in a secret relationship, they would have torn each other to pieces the second Gideon brought Helen home.”

“I guess saying he would raise the baby as a Valor seemed like a good idea to him, and I applaud Gideon for wanting to take responsibility for a child he helped make, but I don’t think he really knew that much about omegas,” Lucy admitted. “Having to see Gideon’s bond on Helen would have sent Melinda into a blind rage. I don’t know if either of them would have survived even if Nicolette approved it.”

That bitch had killed my brother and I couldn’t stop thinking about the way Lucy had acted it all out as if she were the one who was murdered.

I knew Lucy had a degree in criminal psychology. I’d even guessed why she chose to specialize in analyzing someone’s behavior, but I never once thought it would manifest in…that.

Lucy had always liked to play pretend and she’d been a decent actress, but she couldn’t be fully immersed until after she did all the research she thought she needed to do. It was a bit overkill for two kids playing at discovering ancient civilizations, but she’d used that skill to become a tool Frankie could use.

My sunflower didn’t understand people’s why, which I knew was the reason she’d chosen her current profession and why Frankie was her partner but…I just didn’t want to see her do that ever again.

Watching her fall to her knees in Gideon’s office had my heart in my fucking throat and Frankie’s hand squeezing the life out of my fucking wrist had kept me from checking to see if she was okay.

I couldn’t stop seeing Lucy face down on the floor with the stain of Gideon’s blood all around her and I kept thinking that if I didn’t do something she’d end up just like him.

There was nothing I could do though. There was no clear target and I couldn’t go after an omega who worked for me just because she was secretly fucking my brother and if I did, I could cause an unnecessary problem that could get Lucy hurt.

The thoughts in my head were too fucking loud. It was my only saving grace. They were so loud it was starting to drown out what they were saying. They was a roar behind my eyes that made my head throb with a headache that promised a migraine if I couldn’t get those thoughts to shut the fuck up.

All I could do was watch them.
