That question made it feel like my entire body was suddenly covered in numbing cream.
Helen Moss…she wore thick-rimmed glasses like I did sometimes, but her eyes were brown not grey which meant she was claimed. And her hair was bright blue. It was unique enough that I’d actually remembered what color it was. But unfortunately, I hadn’t been able to catch her scent at all.
She’d been 23 weeks along when she miscarried, only 9 days after Gideon told her he wasn’t going to divorce Melinda per these messages.
If that had been me…
Not that I’d ever get with a married, bonded alpha, but still. If the stress and emotional turmoil from that betrayal had caused me to lose my baby, I never would have been able to forgive him – for the baby, the lies…all the dreams he’d set fire to like it was nothing.
What could you possibly need that you don’t already have?
A family.
But Gideon didn’t think he deserved one so he’d chosen Melinda, choosing the path that would ensure he suffered.
“I think…”
Honestly, I didn’t know what I thought about it all. There were threatening messages around the date of Gideon’s death, and she definitely had access to the building, the servers, and the security thanks to Dane, but…
“I think it’s very likely,” I murmured.
I pulled up the picture of the sonogram again. At 23 weeks, it was finally more baby than fetus. There were even cases of babies being born at 23 and 24 weeks who survived. The last time I read an article about it in a medical journal, it was said to be a 60% survival rate after resuscitation.
They’d spend months if not a whole year in the NICU, but they’d survive.
Helen must have been devastated when that coin flip hadn’t landed in her favor. She might have even let Gideon off easy if that baby had survived…
“What did you find?”
I looked up to see Cas and Liam coming back into the office with a snack tray of veggies and bottles of water.
Liam looked a little better. That dull look in his eyes was gone and I could feel how content he was through the bond, even if there was still that miserable melancholy emotion in the background. Cas seemed okay, if a bit anxious.
Never in a million years would I have guessed someone like Cas could be so anxious. He hid it so well and the way he looked was just…commanding. No one would ever know he was questioning everything right underneath the surface.
I felt incredibly special that he trusted me with this knowledge, bonding me even though he knew I’d be able to feel what he was feeling.
“We got the accounts pulled from Mobookie,” Frankie told them, her bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement. She knew we were close too and all we had to do was put the pieces together.
Then it would be done and Liam wouldn’t have to suffer anymore.
“How did you manage that?” Cas asked as he set the tray of veggies and dip on the empty side of my desk. “Do you have someone else who’s willing to commit crimes for you?”
Frankie laughed so hard and loud I jumped, but I didn’t stop compiling the information. I wanted this done tonight if at all possible. The rest would be up to Valor.
“Not this time,” Frankie admitted as she wiped the tears of laughter from her face. “I just had my father tell them the Lopez pack would work with them exclusively if they gave us access to every account they have. It’s a win-win situation. Now we can pull anything for Genesis and Lopez at Law.”
I was pretty sure that violated a lot of privacy laws unless Lopez was the owner of the company, but it wasn’t unusual for legacy packs to make deals with other wealthy packs and dub them as their official subordinate.
“Don’t worry, my father is going to put Mobookie under the Lopez & Co umbrella,” Frankie explained. “He’ll send out a notice to all accounts regarding the changes to their privacy agreement once the deal goes through. It’ll go into effect on Monday so we’ll just pull this shit again later in case Nicolette wants to use it in court.”
“That’s fucking insane,” Cas stated, his eyes wide as he stared at Frankie like he’s never really put it together that she was basically Liam’s equal in status until just now. “I think I get why everyone recommends you two. All those reviews about the Genesis Agency…they make a lot of sense now that I’ve seen just how quickly you two get shit done. And on a scale that shouldn’t be possible.”
“Glad you finally see how valuable we are,” Frankie teased.
I grinned.
Anything was possible with the power of a legacy behind you and the ability to find loopholes in the law when need be.
