“I wonder who I learned it from.”

Not ten minutes ago I was positive I’d have to watch Liam rip his own mother to pieces and now they were laughing together like a bunch of hyenas.

“I see why you bonded her as quickly as you did.” Nicolette sighed and dropped her hand. “I assume you’ll do whatever she decides?”

Liam rested his arm on my shoulder. “Of course.”

Nicolette nodded, clearly expecting that response. “Then I’d like to make an official alliance with the Valentine pack if that’s the way this goes. You were right, Liam. You’ll always be my son, but I don’t want you to be my rival or my enemy and I don’t ever want you to see me as yours.”

I clenched my jaw, knowing this was a good thing even if I didn’t trust it. But I did trust the hint of fear and desperation I could smell in her scent. Liam would do whatever the fuck he wanted and his mother knew it.

Because of that she was forced to make a choice – adapt to the sudden change or lose her son.

There was no doubt in my mind that if Liam brought Lucy home to meet his mother to ask for her approval of their bond before their conversation, she would have said absolutely not. Our omega was too different – she would attract too much attention, but if he left Valor…

Such a conniving asshole.

I wanted to slap him upside the head for giving me so many fucking heart attacks but his method had provided Lucy with choices. I had to give him props for that.

“I’ll relay your message to my omega.” Liam turned to Francisco and that stupid shit-eating grin on his face became predatory. “Have fun with Arturo. I look forward to seeing what you do with him.”

Francisco slapped Liam on the back before turning to his people, ordering his nephew to grab the alpha still in a heap on the floor. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liam’s pheromones had killed him with how weak he was, but that wasn’t our problem anymore.

Liam threw his arm over my shoulders and pulled me toward the door. “Our omega’s eyes are purple.”

“They are.” We stepped outside to see her shading her eyes from the sun as she looked at Frankie’s bike while the alpha blabbered on about something. “I was sure they’d turn red.”

“I was hoping they wouldn’t.”

I studied Liam out of the corner of my eye, not sure I believed him.

“Purple suits her.” He turned my face toward his and I nearly shoved him back.

Liam kissed my cheek, making me freeze.

We were out in the open. Anyone could see us.

Lucy looked up from the bike, sensing my panic no doubt.

“Are you happy?” Liam asked, his expression suddenly serious.

I was fucking ecstatic, but I wasn’t sure why he was asking me that right now.

“Are you angry that I didn’t do this sooner?” Liam hooked his finger in my belt loop and pulled me closer. “I should have left the pack after the way she treated you and I didn’t.”

“No, I’m not angry but I am pissed you have worse control than a teenager sometimes. What’s that about? Aren’t you supposed to be a legacy alpha?”

“Cas.”

I sighed and ruffled my hair, turning back to watch Lucy run her hand over the seat on my bike. “Back then I didn’t want you to leave your pack and I didn’t want your bond, but things are different now. We have the piece we were missing and seeing you make that choice for her…you were making it for me too. So, no. I’m not angry. I’m pretty fucking pleased even if I hate the way you both unilaterally decided to use my name for your new pack.”

“You’re just embarrassed.”

“No shit, asshole.”

“I may have the red eyes but Lucy is my legacy. And so are you. Don’t ever forget that.”

The matter-of-fact way he said that was infuriating because it was embarrassing just how much it meant to me.
