That I was still strong even when I was soft.
“I just want to. So please, if there’s any way for me to see him, even if it’s just for five minutes…do whatever you can to make it happen.”
Francisco studied me, somehow sensing that something was different. “All right, let me work my magic, pumpkin. But it might take some time.”
Then I did something I’d never done before. I threw my arms around Francisco’s neck and hugged him. “Thank you.”
I almost laughed when one of the most notorious legacy alphas froze like he wasn’t sure how to handle this. Then he hugged me back so hard it was difficult to breathe, but I didn’t push him away.
Francisco cleared his throat, sounding strangely hoarse when he said, “There’s so much dust in here.”
“So much dust.” I let go of him and stepped back, feeling just as embarrassed as he probably did. “Shall we sit?”
The sound of heels clicking and clacking had Francisco stepping in front of me before we could.
I peered around him to see the doors to the dining room get flung open, revealing the person who kept making me wonder if I could ever truly measure up to Liam’s legacy.
Nicolette Valor gave the room a cursory glance and then she studied Liam with the brightest red eyes I’d ever seen.
He gave her a wide grin that showed off all his teeth. “I’d say it’s a pleasure, Mother, but I know how much you hate it when I lie.”
Jesus fucking Christ. Leave it to Liam to start the meeting off with a bang.
CHAPTER 28
Liam
It never ceased to amaze me how much my mother looked like Gideon, so much so they were practically twins. They both had golden-blonde hair instead of white and their eyes were the same bright red even after bonding their omegas.
While mine kept getting darker.
My mother and Gideon were even the same height, but their personalities couldn’t be more different.
No, I was the one who was brought into the world to be her reflection. I was the one who was born to be her karma. Everything she hated about me came from her and she knew it too. That’s probably why she was never surprised by the shit I did.
I was what she wished she could be.
“You look healthy,” she told me, studying me from head to toe instead of holding my gaze like she usually did. She didn’t say a word about what I was wearing either.
I was speechless.
My mother was never this calm when I purposefully provoked her.
“Where’s Cassius?” She flipped her long blonde hair over her shoulder but didn’t search the room for him.
Strange. I’d expected her to pick another fight with me, but she didn’t.
Her instincts had always been better than good though. She had to sense just how tense I was about having her in the same room as my omega once again. She didn’t know I’d already bonded her either so she was doing the polite, respectful thing and keeping her eyes on me so I didn’t go berserk when another alpha looked at my omega since we weren’t here for work.
I didn’t know what had changed, but I appreciated what she was doing even if it didn’t matter anymore. Lucy was mine and now she had the marks to prove it.
“It’s not polite to ignore the alpha you came here to meet.” I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering what her game was.
My mother nodded and turned toward Francisco, eyes on him and no one else. “I apologize for being late, Lopez. I wanted to make sure you had time.”
She didn’t explain why she thought he might need time, but Francisco seemed to understand. He nodded but didn’t move from where he was standing. “Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Valor.”
Neither of the two alphas moved and I wasn’t sure how to proceed. We were on equal footing here, but there were complications I didn’t want Lucy to get mixed up in.
