The way Cas was watching me made me feel like maybe I should run for it. His eyes were so insanely blue. I didn’t think I’d ever get used to that. “You want me to wear a shirt?”
I lost any sense of what I was even trying to do anymore. “I guess so.” I cleared my throat and put my hand on his bare chest so I could push him away, but Cas grabbed my wrist and yanked me closer.
The chair was a fucking traitor, rolling me right into his arms.
“Why do you want me to wear a shirt?”
“You’re distracting,” I hissed, pushing him back so he wouldn’t be able to scent how badly I wanted him to have me for breakfast. “Both of you need to wear shirts when I’m working. I can’t think when you’re walking around with your nipples out on display like that.”
His sharp grin made my heart race, but he didn’t try to take advantage of my arousal. “A shirt. I can do that. Is there anything else I can do to help?”
“Just give me a second to think.” I went to push him away again but he buried his face in my neck to breathe me in and I found myself running my fingers through his hair instead. It was crazy how easy it was to give in when they were like this.
And the tattoos on his back were gorgeous – brutal lines that made his shoulders look massive and his waist look tiny. I’d never get enough of this, but the sight of them wasn’t exactly helping me think.
“I just need time to finish up this report and go through the encrypted drive,” I said, more for myself than for him.
When I sank my fingers into his hair, Cas didn’t even look up. He was content to hold me like this while I ran my fingers through his hair over and over again. I was pretty sure he was purring too.
I had to admit, it was nice to take a moment to breathe and just…exist.
After getting up earlier than I should have, I spent hours organizing all this shit just to find nothing.
Corporate espionage was definitely an issue and I was going to make sure we got a bonus out of this, but it didn’t give me the answer I was looking for.
But the shell company Helen Moss was reporting to was owned by the Tinley pack and I refused to believe it was a coincidence. Not at this point in the investigation. It had to mean something – had to be a clue.
I was waiting for Frankie to finish up her full profile on Helen Moss after sending her everything she’d asked for, but when I’d met the IT director yesterday, I’d gotten a bad feeling I couldn’t explain.
Maybe it was the way she’d looked at me, or maybe it was how much of Gideon’s computer she’d gotten into compared to all the other executives…
They had to be connected somehow. More than what was obvious on the surface.
I even suspected she might be his point of contact – the one helping him launder money with the Steele pack, but I could be wrong. I didn’t know enough about why people would do things to guess something like that when I knew almost nothing about her.
Cas rubbed his face in my neck, his purring getting louder. “Can I stay here with you while you work?”
“If you don’t distract me.”
He chuckled and lifted me out of the chair in one smooth motion. Then he sat down in my place and settled me on his lap to face the top-of-the-line tech I’d found waiting for me this morning. “You’re so good at pleasing your alphas, aren’t you, Lucy?”
“I try.” I grabbed the desk and pulled us closer. “This is still distracting though.”
“But you can’t see my bare chest anymore.”
“No, but I can feel it.” He was like a damn heater too. “Why can’t you just put a shirt on?”
“And miss that look on your face? No fucking way.”
Ugh, why did he like to embarrass me so much?
“What exactly are you working on now?” He scooted us closer and leaned forward so he could get a better look. “Is this a report?”
“It is.” I scrolled back to the top and reread what I’d written before Liam and Cas woke up. “The Valor pack hired the Genesis Agency to find out who killed Gideon Valor. They did not hire us to find out if there’s a spy in their company so I’m making a separate report on that with all the information I’ve found, including the evidence. If Nicolette wants this information, she can buy it.”
“Diabolical,” Cas murmured against the back of my neck, his lips skimming over my still-sensitive bond marks and making me shiver. “Once Nicolette gets over Liam’s decision to leave the pack, she’s going to love you.”
I snorted. “I highly doubt that.”
