That’s what I’d normally think, but she just looked so…happy?
I didn’t like it.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Liam. Try not to be late.” She slammed the front door closed before I could have the last word and I snarled softly at the missed opportunity.
Well, I’d just have to get her back at the meeting between Lopez and Valor tomorrow.
“I think she likes you,” Frankie told Lucy, chuckling slightly when my omega glared at her. “Nicolette is a notorious hard-ass, but from what I hear, she’s always had a soft spot for true love.”
It was my turn to glare at her. “Are you saying my brother didn’t love Melinda?”
Frankie’s smile dropped and she leaned back to stare up at my chandelier. “He did, but I don’t think it was true love.”
“And why not?” My brother had stood up to my mother for the first time in his life for his omega. How could that be anything other than true love?
“Liam…” Frankie rolled her head to the side to look at me and I really didn’t like what I saw in her eyes. “Everything Gideon did was out of a sense of duty. His omega wasn’t any different. If he truly loved her the way you love Lucy, do you think he would have ever considered leaving her? He could have just told Valor to fuck off and leave everything to you or Dane so he could enjoy his freedom with her.”
I looked away, knowing she was right even if I didn’t want to believe it.
Gideon had put everything on the line for his omega, and then planned to leave her like none of it had ever meant anything.
I wanted to hate Melinda for betraying my brother, but I couldn’t. Not when she had to have known the truth years before the rest of us.
Surviving as a bonded omega in a legacy pack with an alpha who doesn’t love you had to be…excruciating.
My hand spasmed, gripping Cas’s neck like he was my lifeline.
“Let’s eat something and then go,” Cas suggested, sliding his gaze from Lucy to me. “That’ll give Nicolette time to set everything up.”
Right. My mother was actively helping us despite what I’d told her, and she hadn’t screamed at Lucy for daring to seduce me. She’d just…left.
That was even more unsettling than knowing the killer was aware we’d found a connection at the café, but I couldn’t say I hated this either.
If my mother could accept Lucy, that would make everything a thousand times easier.
After all, I loved my mother, despite everything.
I didn’t want to kill her if I didn’t have to.
CHAPTER 19
Lucy
Liam parked right in front of Valor Enterprises like he owned the place and I guess, technically, he still did. His plan to leave the Valor pack wasn’t public knowledge yet, but still. Wasn’t this a bit much?
He was probably just trying to irritate his mother.
“Here.” Liam took my wrist and turned it over so my palm was facing up. He set something in my hand and gently wrapped my fingers around it.
Looking down at the key fob, I tried to figure out what the fuck he wanted me to do with it.
“Happy birthday, Lucy.”
My jaw dropped and I stared at him, wondering just how many screws he had loose. “My birthday isn’t until April so why are you giving me…keys?”
He grinned and leaned across the center console to brush his lips against mine in a sweet kiss. “I’ve missed fifteen birthdays so I figured I should get you something good and I couldn’t wait until next month. Do you like it?”
“Like what exactly?”
