I glanced back at my mother. “I was feeling thirsty. Are you really going to blame me for wanting a coffee at a quiet café that never once called the reporters whenever Gideon frequented the establishment?”
My mother paled and reached for the kitchen island to steady herself.
I took the opportunity to make my way over to Lucy where Cas was hovering even if it looked like he was doing nothing more than looking out the window. If he wanted to be more subtle, he shouldn’t be standing right behind her.
Lucy didn’t shy away when I sat down beside her and placed my arm along the back of the couch. She even shifted closer to me so our thighs touched and I stared down at her, wondering how I got so lucky.
She was anxious about my mother showing up out of the blue. I could feel it through the bond, but she looked completely unbothered as she stared down at the to-go cup in her hands.
My mother took it upon herself to sit down on the couch across from us with all the grace of a legacy alpha who’d been trained not to let a single weakness show since the moment her eyes turned red. “Fine, let’s just call it bad luck.”
I narrowed my eyes, not sure I believed her.
She looked to Lucy then and my hackles raised. “I’ve read through the reports you’ve sent me and I have to say, I’m very impressed.”
What the fuck was this? It had to be some kind of trick.
“I’m glad, Valor,” Lucy murmured, properly using my mother’s legacy title with her eyes down and her hands in her lap like she’d done this a million times before. “If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
I hated this version of her. It was so…bland.
Slowly, so as not to scare her, I took one of her hands and brought it to my lips, kissing her knuckles. Lucy looked up at me and irritation flashed in her eyes, but she didn’t yank her hand out of mine.
“I have a question, Lucy.”
Her eyes flashed again and I felt my grin sharpen when Cas still didn’t sit down, as if he expected me to pull some crazy nonsense out of my ass at any moment.
“What could you possibly need to ask me right now?” Lucy did her best to sound polite, but she was annoyed and anyone who knew her could hear it.
“Could you please tell Cas to take a seat? He’s making me nervous.”
“You’re making me nervous,” Cas muttered under his breath.
Lucy narrowed her eyes at me, but then she turned to Cas and raised an eyebrow up at him. Without a word, he sighed and sat down.
“You’re so good at making my dog heel,” I praised, making her glare at me again. “Stop looking down. It’s pissing me off.”
Her eyes widened and she pulled her hand out of mine. “Then stop being so rude and officially introduce me to your mother already.”
Ah, that stupid rule.
Technically, an omega shouldn’t look into the eyes of an alpha that wasn’t part of their pack unless they were introduced to them by their alpha. In other words: me.
“I apologize,” I murmured, feeling a tiny thrill go through her when I gave her a slow smile. She knew I was pleased with her and if there weren’t so many fucking people in the room…
I slid my gaze to my mother. “Lucy, this is my mother, Nicolette Valor. She’s the alpha of the whoooooole Valor pack. Mother, this is my omega, Lucy.”
CHAPTER 18
Liam
Without suppressants, Lucy was at her full potential, and she didn’t have to worry about the side effects anymore now that she was bonded, but I was curious to see how many of the dominant omega traits she still had after the bond.
We all kept our mouths shut as Lucy held the gaze of an alpha of a legacy pack without once blinking. I knew she was capable of such a thing, but it was still something else to see it in person.
Though, I had to say, I was proud of my mother. She didn’t react to the blatant display of power even though it was coming from an omega. She even managed to keep her face completely neutral when she said, “I’d ask how you seduced him, but I know my son better than that. He can be rather stubborn and obsessive.”
Lucy didn’t say anything, but she didn’t look away either.
