Even though Frankie had explained why she’d removed her scent blockers in the car and why she was wearing a shirt she’d slept in, I still couldn’t believe she’d been right about this. I really thought it wouldn’t work because she wasn’t Liam, but apparently, it didn’t matter who the alpha was.
Melinda was going to do her very best to manipulate their instincts.
I had to admit, I couldn’t help but respect her for using what others considered a weakness as a weapon.
“Was he threatening you?” Frankie kept her voice gentle and leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees so she could look up into Melinda’s face like she really did care. Even the pheromones she was letting out were gentle and soothing. “Is that why you told him you were pregnant?”
I clenched my teeth to keep my jaw from dropping when Melinda nodded pitifully.
“An alpha wouldn’t hurt a pregnant omega,” Melinda whispered, more tears falling onto her hands. “I never said it was his though. I let him believe whatever he wanted to believe.”
If I didn’t know for a fact the baby in her womb was Dane’s, I might believe her too.
Frankie took those delicate hands in her own. The scent of floral tangerines was filling the room, but it was so subtle I doubt anyone but me would even notice the shift as she wove the scent through Melinda’s with the kind of expertise that most would consider impossible.
“Even some of the worst alphas won’t touch a pregnant omega, but you can’t take risks like that again,” Frankie told her. “Most alphas can’t overcome their instincts, but not all of them.”
Melinda held onto Frankie like she was her knight in shining armor, and I almost gagged at the scent of satisfaction coming off of the other omega. “Then…what am I supposed to do now?”
“All you need to do is tell me why Gideon was threatening you and I’ll make sure no one from this pack can ever hurt you again.”
“He kept threatening to leave,” Melinda admitted. “That’s why I told Dane I was pregnant. They spent so much time together…I thought he’d know why he wanted to leave. I didn’t want to tell Gideon until I knew. Dane was just trying to protect me, but….”
“That was smart,” Frankie murmured. “I know it’s not easy being an omega.”
And this was why Frankie was the best. Melinda didn’t even realize she’d answered a question – one Frankie had never asked.
“It’s not,” Melinda agreed.
She leaned in a little closer to Frankie, her eyes drooping just a little like she was lost in a spell. “They said it was my fault,” Melinda whispered. “That I was going to be thrown away if I didn’t get pregnant. Do you really understand what it’s like to be worth nothing more than a breeder?”
“Not personally,” Frankie soothed. “But as an alpha, I can empathize. I’d never leave my omega for something like that. She’s too precious to treat her as if she were nothing more than a pet.”
Melinda blinked up at Frankie, tears artistically hanging from her lashes. I wanted to know how she managed that. How did she keep them from falling until she was ready? Her performance was irritating, but I couldn’t deny that it was impressive.
A shame Frankie was just as good at acting, if not better.
CHAPTER 14
Lucy
Thanks to the unusual gentleness of Frankie’s scent, she could use it to enhance her acting. She’d also learned how to weave it through the air like a thread through a needle. It was delicate and incredibly detailed work.
Frankie wasn’t a typical alpha by any means.
“You have an omega?” Melinda frowned, some of the spell Frankie put on her lifting.
Frankie released Melinda’s hands and sat back, crossing her arms over her chest. “I do. Her name is River Steele.”
No fear in Melinda’s eyes, just a flash of ugly jealousy. “I’m surprised I haven’t heard River was engaged again.”
“Do we need to be engaged for her to be mine?” Frankie tilted her head and smiled slightly. “I heard there was some business between Gideon and the Steele pack though. Do you know anything about that?”
“Nothing more than what he mentioned in passing.” Melinda shook her head and those crystal tears fell, splashing onto her hands. “Gideon had a contract with them and he mentioned that Liam kept trying to sabotage it.”
This bitch was throwing everyone under the bus now, wasn’t she?
“Well, that’s understandable.” Frankie’s smile turned into a smirk. “Since Gideon was using them to launder money.”
