Maybe I couldn’t do this with my wrists tied together, but I had to try. I had to give Cas and Liam time to find me. If I could keep her talking just a little bit longer I might be able to get out of here with my life as well as a confession.
“If I’m going to die…” I hesitated and glanced over at Melinda who was still unconscious. “Can you tell me how you got in and out of the building? It’s the only thing I can’t figure out. That and where his missing wedding ring is.”
The two alphas behind her exchanged a look, but they didn’t say anything. Were they really here just to do what she told them to do?
“Why would I tell you that?” Helen reached down and grabbed me by the hair, yanking back so I was forced to look up at her. “Do you think I’m stupid?”
No, I didn’t, but I was hoping.
CHAPTER 44
Lucy
My hands shook and my palms were sweaty. I could feel it. I could feel her predatory gaze on me just like when Arturo had looked down at me as if I were nothing more than dinner. She was going to gut me so I’d bleed out slowly, making my death as excruciating as possible.
I had to stall her. I had to come up with something. I wasn’t good with people, but I wasn’t stupid either.
Helen kidnapped me and Melinda to make the Valor pack suffer, and to make sure they couldn’t track me down, they’d used a drug…how did she even know we were bonded? Well, I wasn’t hiding the marks, but still.
Did she see the scars in the server room?
Regardless. “I still can’t feel them. How are they going to suffer as much as possible if they can’t feel the bond fading as I die?”
“It’s a shame you couldn’t mind your own fucking business,” Helen told me. “I really like you. You’re strong for an omega.”
The stench of her spearmint was overwhelming and so was her fury. I didn’t know how it wasn’t affecting the two alphas behind her, but they stood there, watching us with bored expressions.
Maybe she could target me and only me, but why? I was an omega. Unless she was using her pheromones the way legacy alphas used theirs on normal alphas.
When she didn’t make a move to do anything other than watch me, I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you trying to kill me right now?”
“You think death is funny?”
I laughed even harder, feeling like I was losing my mind. The only other dominant omega in the city was Helen Tinley? It would be impossible to recognize them when they settled into their designation since their eyes were still grey.
But that didn’t mean they didn’t exist.
I don’t know if she knew that’s what she was, but I had a feeling she understood how to use it or the alphas behind her wouldn’t be so docile as they waited for her to tell them what to do.
Shifting my gaze from her to them, I decided to test my theory. “Are you really going to let an omega boss you around? How pathetic.”
Helen snarled in my face but neither me nor the alphas reacted. Their pupils were dilated but that was it. She had to be using some kind of command to keep them so loyal.
“You think because I’m an omega I should let them do everything?” Helen demanded. “I’m disappointed in you.”
I slid my gaze back to hers and gave her a sharp smile, feeling the adrenaline buzzing in my veins as I slowly peeled back all the masks I’ve made over the years to hide just how crazy I was. “It seems you didn’t do your research.”
Helen studied me with wild eyes, her anger intensifying until all I could smell was burning spearmint. “I did my research, Lucy Parker. You’re an orphan adopted by Francisco Lopez and a dominant omega who doesn’t react to an alpha’s command.”
“But my name wasn’t always Lucy Parker.” My smile widened when her brow wrinkled in a frown. “My name was Daphne Thomas and my father was also a dominant omega. Nevan Thomas has killed thirteen alphas, including my mother.”
Her grip on my hair tightened and her eyes were wide with disbelief.
“It’s nice to finally meet another dominant omega.” I bared my teeth at her and released my pheromones all at once.
Helen stumbled back as the scent of black currants and roses filled the room, making the two alphas behind her choke. They coughed, reaching for their throats and when she looked back at them to see what the hell was going on, I used the split-second she was distracted to slice through the rope.
One flick and the restraints slipped away.
