Lucy waved her off but didn’t once look away from Liam.
Unbelievable.
They stared at each other as the sounds of Frankie walking through the house and leaving faded away, and I tried to decide what the fuck I was supposed to do about the storm raging between them.
I should have known three days was too long. The anxious feeling under my skin was subtle enough I’d thought it was my own nerves until it started growing exponentially, starting around lunch today.
Lucy had done her best to hold back because that’s what Liam needed, but now he was hindering her investigation even though he thought he was helping, and destroying his health while he was at it, so yeah. I understood why she was pissed.
But Liam was impossible to redirect sometimes, especially when he needed answers or retribution. He’d been convinced Dane had knowingly been a part of Gideon’s death, but now we knew that wasn’t how things went down.
Lucy had made that very clear when she asked what Liam had never thought to ask.
Why did Gideon trust you and not his brother?
I knew Liam would never have asked that question, even if he had thought of it. He wasn’t ready for the answer, no matter what it might be, and that was extremely evident from the way he was glaring down at his omega, ready for a fight.
I uncrossed my arms and cracked each finger as I braced myself for the consequences of whatever choices I might have to make tonight.
“I’ve waited three days for you to finish with Dane, and now that I have some answers, I don’t want to lose momentum,” Lucy told Liam. “You’re tired and need some sleep, so I’ll have Cas take me to Valor Enterprises. I need to plant a few programs on the servers before the next data packet goes out.”
Fuck me sideways, I knew this was going to happen.
This was nothing like the fight they’d had when she finally learned who Liam really was. I’d been fucking terrified I would have to choose between them during that one – that Lucy would reject Liam completely.
Standing there while he fucking begged her on his knees was one of the most terrifying moments of my life because I knew Lucy wasn’t the kind of person to be swayed by something like that, but by some miracle, Liam managed to crawl back from the brink of disaster.
I still didn’t really understand why or how that had worked, but it did. She’d agreed to be ours, and now…
Our bonds were strong, but the three of us weren’t exactly what I’d call normal or sane.
Lucy hid it better than either of us, but she was fucking crazy, crazy. Legacy alphas of the highest caliber didn’t scare her at all, and it fucking showed because she somehow managed to hold Liam’s gaze even when he started letting out his pheromones and aura, making it very clear just how pissed he was.
“Are you trying to punish me, Lucy?” Liam’s voice was far too soft to be anything other than a warning. “Is that why you’re trying to leave me behind?”
“Are you saying you’re well enough to protect me right now?” she challenged, waving her hand to indicate his disheveled appearance. “You’re too angry and too tired to think clearly. Otherwise, you would have been able to see that Dane wasn’t hiding anything from you two days ago.”
Fuck. She wasn’t wrong about that.
Liam set his hand on top of the stack of pizza boxes and took a step toward her, pushing her back into the desk.
I didn’t hesitate this time.
Whether he felt me breathing down his neck or not, I didn’t know and didn’t care. But if he fucking touched her when he was angry…
“Just be honest, Lucy. Stop sugarcoating everything. You know how much I fucking hate that.” Liam leaned down to get into her face, and I set my hand on his shoulder, reminding him she wasn’t the only one he’d have to deal with if he did something stupid.
The asshole ignored me though, pissing me off even more.
Lucy stepped into him, matching his energy so perfectly I let go of Liam so I didn’t end up as collateral damage. Her grey eyes were so dark and stormy I could almost see lightning in them.
“You may be my alpha,” she said softly and so sweetly that it sent a chill down my spine, “but you are not my partner and neither is Cas. Frankie is. Don’t hurt your own feelings by forgetting that very important detail.”
Jesus fucking Christ. These two.
“If you interfere with my investigation again, I’m going to report you to Nicolette Valor and ask that you be removed as my point of contact,” Lucy told him, her tone so sweet and polite I winced because it fucking cut and it wasn’t even directed at me. “Now, I want to go find out who the fuck is all up in your goddamn servers so I can see if it has anything to do with the Steele pack before Frankie meets with them, but I can’t do that from here. Cassius is just as capable of taking me as you are. Isn’t he?”
I regretted telling her that now because her anger felt so fucking cold it burned through the bond.
