It was…weird.
She reached out then, placing her hand on Melinda’s belly too fast for me to react and I flinched when there was a popping sound before we were plunged into darkness.
I was still holding on to Melinda, but I didn’t know what to do. It was too dark for me to see and I’ve always had bad eyes. “We need to find Cas and Liam.”
Whoever that weird omega was, I didn’t care. I just needed to get to my alphas before something bad happened. Something short circuiting in a building this old wasn’t unusual but I was starting to get a bad feeling.
This was the perfect opportunity to knife a legacy alpha in the dark and get away with it.
I pulled Melinda with me toward the dance floor but someone grabbed my arm to hold me back. I yanked it out of their grip and stumbled forward as the shouts in the ballroom started to sound a bit more panicked.
More hands grabbed me and I gritted my teeth, releasing Melinda so I could get them off. I didn’t recognize them or their scent and I wasn’t going to let someone I didn’t know put their hands all over me when I didn’t know who they were.
Adrenaline flooded my system and I could feel Cas and Liam panicking, desperate to find me. I reached out to them through the bond as I kicked the people grabbing me as hard as I could. It didn’t feel like they were trying to help me so I screamed and that’s when I felt a familiar pinch at the side of my neck.
The metal was cold as it slid into my flesh and the drug they injected into my veins was even colder. I tried to scream again but the sedative was strong – it might even be a strong muscle relaxer with how quickly my body went limp.
I couldn’t do anything to stop them from throwing me over their shoulder and all I could think was why?
I’d been so sure we took care of all the other legacy packs and no one else could get in.…was this Steele then? Had they figured out River’s secret code and were trying to make sure I couldn’t get the evidence I needed?
Or she’d set us up.
The last thing I remembered before I passed out was that there was always a chance the Steele pack and the Tinley pack were working together.
If that was true, River might have planned all this.
She might even kill Frankie.
CHAPTER 42
Cas
I don’t know why I let Liam drag me onto the dance floor. This was not something I liked doing and I definitely did not like the way everyone was watching us.
“Are you okay?” Liam was genuinely concerned for me but he was also giving me that sly smile that made me want to smack him upside the head.
“I’m fine.” Liam led me through the steps and I let him because it was easier. I could keep an eye on Lucy this way. She was with Frankie and I could feel how happy she was but it was just habit to look for her now – to watch everything she did and commit it to memory.
Even if I was irritated she’d suggest I go dance with Liam and then somehow mess with my head enough that I asked if I could dance with her too. Why did I do that? I didn’t like dancing.
Probably because she looked out of this world and I would use any excuse I could to hold her.
“You’re a good dancer for someone who hates it so much,” Liam snickered before twirling me.
I almost punched him right then and there.
“You should see your face.” He threw back his head and laughed, grabbing me before I could turn around and leave. “I’m sorry, okay? I won’t do that again.”
I eyed the mark on his neck that was peeking out from under his black tuxedo shirt. The bruising was getting better but I’d bit him pretty hard. I’d feel bad about it if he wasn’t so fucking annoying all the time. “Why are you like this?”
“Because I love you,” Liam stated simply.
Why did that make me so fucking nervous? I looked around to see if anyone had heard him but no one was really watching us anymore. I glanced over at Lucy who was talking with River and I felt annoyed all over again.
Or embarrassed. Whichever.
Things were different now, but it wasn’t easy to get used to. Neither of us had any plans to make things official or public like this before Lucy.
