I smiled slightly, glad she’d decided to go all in. This was all going to be a thousand times easier thanks to her and I couldn’t be more grateful.
“One last thing.” Liam sounded like he was about to laugh and I wanted to shake some sense into him before he said something to piss everyone off. “Lucy Lopez and Cassius Valentine have agreed to marry me. I look forward to celebrating our engagement with you all.”
The dead silence that followed was more terrifying than the hushed whispers and Cas chuckled as he took my hand and escorted me down the stairs before I had a minor panic attack. “Could have been worse.”
Knowing Liam…
Yeah, it could have been a lot worse.
CHAPTER 41
Lucy
The only thing I could really compare the post-announcement legacy party to was probably the fanciest wedding reception in existence. They served us all a six-course dinner at our tables while string music played in the background.
Chandeliers hung from the ceiling and everything was still decorated in the Victorian style from back when the building was originally built.
From what I remember, all four legacy packs invested in this place not long after the city was founded and used it as a shared event hall for pretty much anything a person could think of, from birthdays and weddings to award ceremonies.
When they weren’t using this place for a legacy event, they rented it out to wealthy packs and then used that money to fund each quarterly meeting.
I don’t know why we had to do this party after the announcements, but I couldn’t say I hated it. Once the third course had been served people started dancing on the professional-level ballroom floor, mingling, and checking out the desserts on the buffet tables along the walls.
Liam had insisted we stay for dessert so I could try them, so here we were at one of the buffet tables with Frankie and River. It wasn’t exactly awkward, but it wasn’t comfortable either since the other omega acted like she couldn’t see anyone other than Frankie or the floor.
“Here, try this Lucy.” Frankie handed me one of the tiny little chocolates shaped like a rose. “There’s cherry nougat inside. They’re to die for.”
Liam immediately took the chocolate from her and held it up to my lips. Did he seriously want to feed it to me right in front of everyone?
Before I could figure out what I was supposed to do in this situation, Cas grabbed Liam’s wrist and pulled it toward him so he could lean down, gently biting into the chocolate.
River and Frankie stared at them with wide eyes, and Frankie’s jaw dropped when Liam pushed the rest of the chocolate into his mouth like it was wedding cake with that wicked smile of his.
I wasn’t any better honestly. I had to pinch my thigh to make sure this wasn’t a dream.
“It’s a shame they don’t have any with black currant nougat,” Cas murmured as he licked the melted chocolate from Liam’s fingers. “But I guess it wasn’t bad.”
Well, wasn’t that just horribly embarrassing.
I cleared my throat and turned toward one of the buffet tables, inspecting all the desserts without really seeing them. “Why don’t you two go dance or something? I’ll be fine with Frankie.”
Four out of the five legacy packs in Acheron were watching over me right now. I really didn’t think we had anything to worry about in a place like this. It was a neutral meeting ground and anyone violating the peace agreement here would immediately pay the price with their life.
Not that that’s ever happened, but the agreement was still in place since they’ve never had a reason to change it.
“Didn’t you want to leave early?” Liam reached over me to grab a different chocolate before holding it out to me.
I took it from his hand, feeling the back of my neck prickle with all the eyes watching us. “Twenty more minutes and we can go. I just…want them to see you and Cas together.”
That might be stupid of me, but they’ve been pretending for so long that they were nothing more than friends and now they didn’t have to do that.
Cas leaned down on my other side to inspect my face, his bright blue eyes seeing everything I tried to hide and more, just like they always did. “Will you dance with me next?”
“Of course.” I turned and offered him the chocolate but he shook his head, his black hair falling into his eyes even now.
My alphas were so beautiful they were hard to look at sometimes.
“Fine, I guess I have to dance with you. Since our omega seems so keen.” Liam grabbed Cas’s hand and rolled his eyes, pretending like all this was a chore, but he felt way too happy for that to be true.
