Tomorrow I would have Lucy on her back so she could see his face when I did this all over again.
I would do it however many times I had to until I was sure they had what they needed because I knew everything would be okay as long as I had them.
Whatever I had to do to keep them happy…I would do it.
Even if it meant I had to show the whole world just how strong I was.
CHAPTER 38
Lucy
It always surprises me how anticlimactic it was when I got to this point in a case. You’d think I’d be used to it by now, but even when things were all wrapped up in a pretty bow, it could be difficult to close the case.
Straightening the sheets on the mattress shoved into the bay window, I made sure to tuck it in tight so it wouldn’t wrinkle. Over the last week, Cas and Liam had built the shelves around the bed as well as on the walls to create a cozy reading den where I could watch the rain and the people walking on the street below us.
All the shelves were the perfect size for my drawing materials, books, and yarn. I could sit here and enjoy any of my hobbies without having to get up. They’d even added a pull-out tray for snacks that tucked back under one of the shelves.
Now all I had to do was fill them with everything I loved.
I turned around and sat down on the mattress that was as soft as a cloud, trying not to feel frustrated.
Despite all the evidence in the messages, we didn’t have any physical proof that proved Helen Tinley killed Gideon Valor.
All the available interns were scouring the footage, but no one has been able to find her on a single camera in the city during the 48 hours around Gideon’s death despite the security logs proving she’d left at 5:13 pm, and then came back into the building at 8:53 am the next day.
That alone was suspicious as hell, but it wasn’t enough to pin her as the murderer.
Because we still had no idea how she managed to get in and out of the building without being detected, Liam had fired Helen Moss from Valor Enterprises and shut down everything in the company for a whole week so Cas could reset the system and make sure it was all clean.
It didn’t seem like Helen was aware that we knew about her relationship with Gideon, but it was hard to tell now that I couldn’t see what she was doing. She’d shut down every device that had anything to do with the information she stole from Valor as well as her burner phone so I couldn’t track her that way either.
Liam had people tailing Helen as well as all the other Tinley’s, bugs were planted and cameras, but they couldn’t drag her into the basement like they had Dane since there wasn’t enough evidence to invoke pack law.
Nicolette did hire Francisco to sue her though, and the Tinley pack, for corporate espionage.
And it hadn’t been difficult to legally get what we needed to prove she was Helen Tinley, not Helen Moss, but that hadn’t really made a difference in the long run because despite all my digging there was no evidence Gideon knew she was a corporate spy.
Without a single tangible reason to tie the two crimes together, getting a warrant to search her house for the murder weapon was impossible without handing over all my evidence to the police so they’d have probable cause.
Gideon’s wedding ring was still missing too and given what we knew now…I was almost positive Helen took it.
Nicolette had asked me if I really thought Helen Tinley possessed the skills to imitate a professional level kill and thanks to Frankie’s profiles, it hadn’t been difficult to convince her.
The Tinley’s liked to go camping as a pack every season to hunt their own meat but we didn’t know enough about how their pack operated internally to be able to assume she had those same skills.
Most traditional omegas from a wealthy background would never hunt with their pack. They’d be waiting back at the campground to cook it after it was cleaned, taking care of their family in the way everyone preferred.
So, yeah I couldn’t say she was capable of taking Gideon down like that with actual evidence to back it up, but I firmly believed she was just as capable as I was.
Helen Tinley was an omega but she was also a spy who got away with it for three years before anyone found out.
I ran my hand over the sheets made of soft bamboo fibers and wished I didn’t relate to her as much as I did.
Melinda had no idea Gideon was having an affair, but Helen did. She got to experience firsthand what that Valor loyalty really meant and it had cost her everything.
In the end…she was nothing more than an omega who couldn’t give him a child of Valor and Melinda could. I knew Liam wouldn’t do that to me, but it did remind me of someone else from one of those unpleasant memories I’d buried along with all the others.
I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I had to know.
