Lucy stepped closer and I instantly made room for her. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but one born of instinct and need. I released Cas and placed my hands on her waist as I waited to see what she needed from me.
If she was here where I could see her and touch her – giving me a purpose, then everything would be fine.
“Are you okay?” she asked with that soft, husky voice of hers that always made me think of velvet and cinnamon whiskey.
I wasn’t okay, but she was here. With me. I couldn’t quite scent her, but I could feel her. It didn’t feel like enough, but it had to be.
Pulling her closer helped, but it also made everything worse. She still wasn’t close enough and my hands gripped her tighter. I couldn’t let her go. Now that she was in front of me…I couldn’t let her out of my sight.
I had a question I needed to ask her and she was going to answer. She had to.
“Liam.”
I snarled softly, but the growl in my chest died because the tone in her voice warned me I wouldn’t like what she’d do if I didn’t stop.
Sliding my hands up her back, I leaned forward, baring my teeth just to see how she’d react. If she flinched right now like she did sometimes, or?—
“You did good,” she told me in that soft, husky voice of hers. It wasn’t weak or hesitant, just quiet. “I couldn’t have done any of this without you.”
“All I did was stand there.” But I could feel some of my misery at being so useless ease with her praise.
Then she let go of me and reached up, pulling the adhesive of her scent blockers off before tossing them onto a nearby table. I froze, mesmerized by what she was doing.
“You gave me everything I needed to succeed.” Lucy wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me in, surprising me again with how generous she was being with her physical affection while Frankie was still in the house. “You’ve always believed in me, Liam. I can’t ever thank you enough for that.”
I buried my face in her neck and breathed her in, feeling more of those depressing thoughts disappear as her scent filled my lungs. They were still there but the overwhelming gratitude I could feel coming through the bond made it all seem so far away.
Black currants and musky roses replaced my thoughts of shattering bones.
Cas came up behind Lucy, but he didn’t touch her. “Are you done for the night, or do you still need to work?”
“There’s nothing we need to do tonight that we can’t assign to the interns,” Frankie told us as she headed toward the front door. “I’m heading back to the Lopez compound and I’ll go through the rest of the messages there.”
She must have been able to scent Lucy’s pheromones. I was surprised she’d leave now that Lucy was bonded and they wouldn’t affect her the same way, but I appreciated how Frankie kept giving us the space we needed to figure out how to make this work.
It was an extremely kind thing for her to do, especially since I’d started all this by threatening her.
Frankie was a better alpha than I was, but now I had a partner. One who was going to help me figure out how to make all Lucy’s wishes come true.
I wrapped my arms around Lucy and Cas when the door closed behind Frankie, pulling them both toward me. “Should I ask her now?”
“Hey! I can’t breathe.” Lucy glared up at me and yanked on my hair, pushing back at the same time to force us to give her space and I couldn’t help but think she looked even more perfect like this.
“You should ask her now, but first…” Cas grabbed me by the back of the neck and pulled me even closer so he could kiss me.
It wasn’t soft or gentle either, but violent. I felt his sharp teeth break the skin on my lips before he forced me to open my mouth so he could slide his tongue along mine.
Lucy gasped as she watched and her scent got stronger, easing more of the tension in my body until I felt like all the shit I was dealing with earlier didn’t exist anymore.
Her scent perfumed all around us and I groaned into his mouth when her fingernails dug into my chest like tiny little knives. It felt so good when his pheromones started mixing with hers that I grabbed his waist and pressed her back against him.
There were fights that felt this way – like I was giving in to the beast inside of me and letting my instincts win. I kissed him back harder than I intended, but I had no patience left. I was barely sane thanks to them and it felt a lot like it did right before a rut, but I couldn’t afford to let that happen right now
I had to be the alpha they needed me to be.
Cas finally broke away and licked the blood from his lips. “Ask her.”
I picked Lucy up and she wrapped her legs around my waist, giving me exactly what I needed. “We have a question for you.”
