Cas snarled at me and I flinched, shocked that he could look so feral even after all that. “You have no idea, Lucy. No idea.”
I studied his face, trying to understand what had changed and why. “Then please explain it to me. I’m not a mind reader.”
“You’re killing me, sweetheart.” Cas sighed and held me tight, one hand gripping the back of my neck. It felt insanely possessive and protective and all the tension left my body like he’d just given me another orgasm. “I fucking love you Lucy, but sometimes I swear you pretend like you’re not the smartest person I know.”
I wanted to feel insulted, but he wasn’t wrong. “Look, there’s a difference between knowing how to solve complicated math problems in my head and being able to figure out what someone’s intentions are without enough context.”
“I know, I’m sorry.” Cas kissed my cheek roughly and leaned back against the wall as he waited for the water to warm up. “I’ve been waiting to hear you say that ever since I lost my mind when you got sick.”
“Say what?”
“That you want my bond.” His arms tightened around me even more and his fingers dug into my neck like he was physically holding himself back from doing something insane. “I just can’t give it to you yet.”
I pulled back to get a better look at him and he reluctantly loosened his hold so I could. “Why not?”
“Because you promised your first bond to Liam.” Cas gave me a sad little half-smile and for some reason it made him look adorable.
He growled when my pussy clenched around him, eyes narrowing. “Why the fuck did that turn you on?”
“I find loyalty extremely attractive,” I told him, rubbing my nose against his just because I could. “You’re an alpha. It wouldn’t have surprised me if you tried to bond me first, since I know that’s what your instincts are screaming at you to do, but you’re not.”
“You’re crazy, you know that?”
“So are you.”
That little half-smile widened into a smirk and he pushed me down to grind me against his knot, sending another shockwave through me. “I’m crazy for you, Lucy. No one else.”
“As you should be.” I couldn’t believe he was still hard. His knot hadn’t deflated even a little bit either. “Now tell me why your very sexy loyalty to Liam means I have to take a shower while you still have me knotted.”
The smile on his face completely disappeared and he looked so serious I actually felt nervous. “I need you two to figure out your shit already, okay? Stop putting it off. Find whatever it is he took from you and deal with it.”
“I’m not disagreeing with you, but I want to understand why you think I need to.”
Steam filled the bathroom, but Cas didn’t move even though the water was hot now. He just looked into my eyes like he wished he could tell me whatever it was I needed to know.
“For a few reasons, sweetheart. But the biggest one?” He sighed and leaned his forehead against mine. “Someone did manage to kill Gideon, but Liam will be a completely different story. When the world finds out you’re our omega…let’s just say I want to make sure they’ll think twice before trying to take you out of the picture.”
A chill ran down my spine when I realized he was right.
If I started poking my nose into places I shouldn’t, they would try to get rid of me before I became a problem. I wasn’t a cop. There were no repercussions to killing me if they could make sure there wasn’t any evidence.
The only thing that might make them reconsider would be all the power at Liam’s disposal.
“You need to end this game today, Lucy.”
His knot deflated and I clung to him, trying not to freak out about this when I’d known it would happen the moment I let Cas inside the apartment.
“I also want to watch him bond you,” he murmured, holding me tight so I wouldn’t go anywhere when he reached down and unlaced his boots. “I can’t fucking wait to see what color your eyes are going to turn when he claims you.”
Cas stepped out of his boots and then his pants, holding my gaze the entire time.
“Do you think they’ll turn red?” He pressed his face to my neck and breathed me in before yanking me back up. “What about when I bond you?”
I had no idea what would happen but I was mesmerized by the way he looked when he talked about it – like he’s been thinking about this for a long time.
“Are you going to bond him too?”
Cas grinned as he carried me into the shower. “Do you want me to?”
