CHAPTER 1
Lucy
Those deep red eyes with flecks of ruby in them glittered, daring me to run.
Liam Valor, the most dangerous legacy alpha in the city – if not the whole country, was hoping I would run so he could hunt me down.
No matter how much I wanted to, I didn’t trust those eyes despite just how breathtaking they were.
“Lucy…” Liam said my name with a teasing lilt that warned me I should really, really move my ass instead of staring at him like an idiot.
Why the fuck did I think I could investigate their creepy basement while they were in the fucking house? I just knew my curiosity was finally going to get me killed but it was hard to be mad about it because I was right.
There was something very wrong with them.
Maybe it was the madness speaking, but I just didn’t care what happened to me as long as I got the answers I needed.
What was I supposed to do now?
If I ran from them, I might never get those answers – if I died, I would never know what secrets they were harboring. They might even be the ones who killed Gideon.
How was I going to figure any of that out if I died?
Then I had to make sure they didn’t kill me before answering my questions. I also had to make sure I wasn’t the only one who knew those answers.
I needed to warn Frankie.
The muscles in my shoulders were tight and the back of my neck prickled with Cassius staring a hole into the back of my head, silently waiting for me to move before he pounced.
Honestly, I was shocked they were giving me a second to decide for myself before tying me up and torturing me like they had with Arturo. Why they weren’t taking advantage of this moment, I didn’t know, and I was pretty fucking sure I didn’t want to know.
“Go on,” Liam teased. “Try to run.”
The sudden sound of his voice made me jump, but I didn’t move from my spot between them as I mentally went over the layout of their house as quickly as possible.
It wasn’t really my fault we were in this situation.
Their creepy basement was so well hidden I hadn’t noticed the secret door the first time I’d inspected everything and I doubt I would have even considered that a possibility if they hadn’t gone down there while I was in the house.
“You shouldn’t have left me alone if you didn’t want me to find out.” I took a single step back and then froze when Liam smirked at me.
“Maybe, but then again, we weren’t the only ones who fucked up, were we? You shouldn’t have gotten caught, Lucy. I’m quite disappointed in you. I thought you were supposed to be the best.” Liam crossed his arms over his bare chest, squeezing his pecs together like he knew just how hard it was for me to keep my eyes on his face instead of his ridiculously sensual body.
I should be grateful he decided to put on a pair of sweats before coming downstairs.
A soft sound behind me was the only warning I got and my body moved before I could think twice.
Thanks to all the training my father forced on me over the years, it was pure instinct to dodge to the left and twist, just barely avoiding Cassius’s outstretched arm. Liam didn’t move at all as he watched me, so confident I couldn’t outrun them.
It was infuriating.
There were very few options that would allow me to escape. Even fewer that would give me the answers I needed, but my body was moving on its own, running on pure instinct just like it had for the last thirteen days.
Cassius tried to grab me again and I ducked as I slammed into one of the bookcases, knowing I still had to find a way past Liam. I had to try, even if the chances I’d be able to evade him were slim to none.
If nothing else, I needed to put some distance between us and get ahold of a phone.
Then Frankie would handle the rest.
