She placed the mirror in his hand, wrapping his fingers around the edges. He took a deep breath, preparing himself for the worst and wondering if he could pick the hair up off the floor and glue it to his head.

Slowly, he held the mirror up to his face and finally looked directly at his reflection, except he didn’t recognize the man staring back at him. It had been so long since he did more than catch a glimpse of himself in a mirror. His face had changed so much and the scars while still muddled his skin weren’t nearly as bad as he remembered they were when they were fresh and new after the accident.

He could see his eyes, blue like his dad’s, staring at him. He didn’t want to throw the mirror in disgust, and that shocked him.

“So… what do you think?” Raelyn asked again.

He lowered the mirror and placed it on the counter behind him. He stood, taking Raelyn with him.

“What are you doing?” Her legs wrapped around his waist, and he brought them to the shower. He turned the water on and stepped in.

“I’m covered in hair, but I also need to be inside you. Two birds, one stone,” he said before crashing his mouth to hers and thrusting into her.

Chapter 22

Raelyn rocked back and forth, waiting for the doctor to show up. She had a meeting in an hour to go over a sweet sixteen party, then a consultation with a potential new client followed by a meeting with Isla at the florist to go over arrangements for another wedding. Her plate was filling up, but she wasn’t looking to slow down any time soon. Her career was finally taking off, soaring to new heights and moving toward all her dreams.

Now if she could just figure out what kind of vitamins her body was lacking, she’d be completely unstoppable.

The door opened after what felt like hours. A quick glance at her phone told her it had only been ten minutes.

“Raelyn, it’s good to see you,” Dr. Soto said as she walked into the exam room and closed the door behind her. She glanced at her chart before placing it back on the counter.

“Do I have a vitamin deficiency?” Raelyn asked, ready to get the show on the road, so she can get to her meetings and stay on schedule.

“No, you’re pregnant.”

“Ha! Good one. Really, what’s wrong with me?”

“There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re healthy as an ox, but you are very much pregnant.”

There had to be a mistake. A mix up with the urine samples. There was no possible way she could be pregnant. “How can I be pregnant? I’m on the pill.” She rolled her eyes to emphasize the ridiculousness of the situation. Dr. Soto made a mistake, is all.

Dr. Soto sat down on her stool and turned to her. “Even birth control isn’t a hundred percent effective, especially the one you’re on if you don’t take it at the exact same time every day. Have you missed any recently?”

She wracked her brain, trying to remember. The damn pill was more of a nuisance than anything. She took it when she remembered most of the time. “I doubled up a month ago.” But that wasn’t anything new.

“You can’t double up on this pill.”

“I always double up when I miss one.”

“That was your old pill, but the new pill we put you on because of your blood pressure issues from the old, you can’t double up and you shouldn’t. That pill needs to be taken on a regular schedule.”

“Don’t you think you should have told me this?”

“I tried, but you were on your phone dealing with a problem at work. I gave you a packet with all the information and told you to read it. You said you would.”

“No one ever actually reads the packet!” Everyone knew that.

The room spun around Raelyn, and her heart slammed against her chest. Pregnant. How did this happen? Not that she didn’t know. God, she’d been having more sex than a pornstar. But pregnant! This had to be the universe playing some sick joke on her.

She wanted her career to take off first, then get married, then kids. Kids weren’t supposed to come first. And then there was Ryder. The way he had looked the day after the first time they’d had sex. Terrified that they didn’t use protection. He didn’t want kids. He made that perfectly clear, and she assured him she was on the pill. How could she go to him now and tell him she was pregnant?

Dr. Soto continued talking, laying out options, but Raelyn couldn’t concentrate on any of it.

Maybe she’d give him a beer, let him relax a little. Oh my God! “I drank a beer. Do you think I caused damage? Did I hurt the baby? I didn’t know. If I did, I never would have, but I didn’t know and I had a beer.”

“A beer is not going to hurt the baby. But now that you know it would be best to cut out your alcohol intake. Along with seafood that’s high in mercury and cut down your caffeine intake as well.”
