“Don’t try to persuade me with sex. I have a wedding that is set to happen and no bar. I need to stay focused on my priorities, and right now, that is not your penis.”
Amusement flittered across his face, and he put the truck in drive. Thank heavens. The suspense was killing her. He drove toward the barn and turned at the entrance, but he didn’t stop. He kept driving toward the rugged path.
She yanked on her seatbelt to make sure it was secure and prepared her body to be bounced around like a popcorn kernel in the microwave. The truck jolted up, and she grabbed the oh shit handle, holding herself in place.
“Are we going to the shed?”
“Yeah, I thought you and the lady in white could have a bitch session. You seem like you need it.”
She narrowed her eyes and glared at him. “Very funny.”
“I really thought that a bath would calm you down, but clearly I was wrong.”
“I can’t calm down. Things aren’t going to plan, and when things don’t go to plan, I have a mini freak outs until I fix everything.”
He brought the truck to a stop and turned to her. “Close your eyes.”
“Huh?”
“Close your eyes, or I’ll wrap my sweaty shirt around your face.”
She gave him one last glare, then let her eyes slip shut. “I really hate surprises.”
“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” he said, but his voice was at her window. The door creaked open, and he scooped her into his arms. His heat engulfed her, sparking her desire as his strong hold loosened, and he placed her on the ground.
His hand pressed into her lower back, and she trusted him to catch her if she fell. She walked forward, moving in the direction he guided her. They came to a stop and his breath wisped against her ear. “Open.”
Her lids shot wide, adjusting to the bright sun that was beating down from above. She blinked once, twice, letting her eyes focus, and then she gasped. Her hand flung to her mouth, smacking her lips with a resounding pop.
Her eyes skated over the three barrels on a raised platform, a piece of wood perfectly placed across the top.
“It still needs a stain, but once that’s done and with bottles lining the one side, I think it’ll do.”
“It’s perfect!”
“Really? You think so?” he asked, and she loved the doubt in his voice. It was obvious how much he wanted her to like it, and she did.
“I do. I love it. It is more than I could have imagined. It matches the rustic chic theme, and it’s going to look so good in place.”
“I told you to trust me.” He glanced at her, the blue of his eyes sparkling in the sunlight. In that moment, she realized, she not only trusted him, she was falling in love with him.
“I should never have doubted you.”
“Nope.” He snaked his hand around her waist, tugging her against him. She lifted on her tiptoes and captured his lips.
“What do you say? Want to give the lady in white a little show? Or do you have a million things to do still?” His teasing smile nearly undid her.
She tossed her arms around his neck and pulled him to her. “I think I have time for one show. Maybe an encore, too. Depends how good the first act goes.”
“Oh, it’s going to go really well.”
“You’re so sure of yourself.”
“No, I’m sure of us.” He lifted her up, but instead of bringing her into the old beat down shed, he laid her on the grass, beneath the sun. Surrounded by trees, the only sounds around them were the high pitch chirps of the birds. He kissed her, and every panic and worry she had slipped away.
Chapter 16
It had only been a couple weeks since Raelyn had showed up in his life and even less since they started spending their nights together, but now that she was at the wedding, he was left home, missing her, and wishing he could be with her. She had invited him to go, not as a guest, but as her assistant, though she promised he wouldn’t be doing much assisting. She just wanted him there with her. He’d turned her down, and while at the moment he hadn’t questioned his immediate answer, now he was.
