“Happy Birthday, Nana!” Sammy yelled and helped my mother to blow out the candles on her cake.
I held my son up so he could reach them, but I looked at Ellie, catching the joy on her face as she snapped pictures. She smiled at me from her place next to Gabby, Mom’s best friend, and the woman Ellie once thought I might be cheating on her with.
It wasn’t funny at the time, but once Ellie saw the elderly woman with gray curls sitting in her wheelchair with a crocheted lap blanket spread across her, along with a dozen knitting projects, my wife had blushed adorably.
“Okay, does everyone have room for cake?” Mom asked, and a round of deep masculine yeses went around the room.
I was surprised when Adrik, Marat, Josef, and their families had said yes after Ellie insisted that I invite them to Mom’s birthday. It was the Saturday right after Thanksgiving, and I expected them to be tuckered out.
We’d spent half the holiday at Adrik’s and Sofia’s and the other half with Mom and her friends.
“Come help me cut the cake, Sammy!”
“Be careful,” I said, letting my boy down to chase after his Nana.
I ambled over to Ellie, who smiled prettily at me, and held out my hand.
“You don’t mind if I steal my wife, do you, Gabby?” I asked.
“Course not, Andres. But bring her back soon. We have crochet lessons to start next time I see her,” the older woman said, winking at my wife.
Ellie blushed, her eyes going guiltily to the project Gabby was working on, and I frowned, trying to make heads or tails of what the woman was making.
“Is that a?—”
“It is! I have my own store on Etsy now. Your mom helped me set it up, Andres. These are for a client who happens to be a romance author, she calls them book boners, isn’t that cute?” the older woman laughed.
“Book boners? Ooh, let me see!” Sofia came running over.
I shook my head and tugged my wife closer to me.
“Crochet lessons, huh?”
She giggled and slid her arms around my neck.
“Well, I don’t think I’ll start with something quite as complicated as book boners, but maybe a baby blanket might be nice.”
“Baby blanket?”
“Yeah, I thought. Well, when you’re ready, maybe we can try,” she started, but I was already crashing my mouth to hers.
Ellie moaned, kissing me back without reservation.
“Wanna get out of here?” I asked against her lips.
“Well, I suppose we can leave early. Sammy is looking forward to his sleep over with his Nana,” my wife replied.
EPILOGUE TWO ELLIE
“Husband!” I cried out, scoring my nails down Andres’ back.
The second I mentioned wanting to try for a baby, Andres went all caveman on me.
Not that I was complaining.
He picked me up when we were in the elevator, making my heart pound and my pulse race.
“I'm too heavy,” I protested when he started to walk down the hall with me in his arms.
