Ring. Ring. Ring.
I looked down. My heart was hammering inside my chest, and I wasn’t sure why, but it felt like something was about to happen.
Something that could maybe change my life.
CHAPTER FOUR ANDRES
Iheaved a sigh, slightly annoyed at the interruption.
Not that I was doing anything.
Well, anything other than obsessing over Ellie.
Glancing down, I exited the security feed I’d had paused on my cell phone.
Ignoring the sudden urge to get a screenshot of the zoomed in image of her elfin face, I swiped up to close the app and checked the ID of the caller.
Unknown?
My heart stuttered beneath my breastbone as I pressed the green button.
“Hello?”
I knew Ellie had been given an untraceable burner phone upon entry to the shelter, and she was the only person with an Unknown Caller ID who had my phone number.
I’d made sure of that.
“Andres? It’s me.”
Her voice sounded tinny through the cheap phone, but I closed my eyes on the wave of emotion that filled me at hearing her say my name.
Ellie called me.
She called me.
“Yeah, it’s me. Is everything okay?” I asked, clearing my throat a little.
“Yes. Well, not really,” she replied.
“Which is it? Yes or no? Ellie, do you need me to send a security team?”
I already had my backup phone in my hand, ready to send an alert to Sigma, and slipping my shoes back on my feet.
“No, no. Um, I was wondering, would you, that is, if you don’t have anything better to do?—”
Her voice sounded muffled, like she was covering her mouth. Maybe from embarrassment? I canted my head, trying to decipher what the heck was going on.
“Ellie. Spit it out.”
“Would you be willing to marry me?” she blurted, and fuck me, I almost fell out of my chair.
Well. Shit.
Whatever I thought she was going to ask, that wasn’t it.
“Oh my God! I’m being dumb. I’m sorry. Um, forget I said?—”
No way. She wasn’t getting out of this that easily.
