“Hi,” I smiled. Well, I tried to smile, but my lips might be drier than my mouth, which was rivaling the Sahara Desert at this point.
“Here.” He let my hand go, and the next thing I knew, there was a straw pressing against my lips. I sucked in some water. As soon as the cool liquid hit my mouth, I felt like I’d been transported to heaven. I continued drinking until he removed the straw.
“What happened?” I asked.
“You passed out in court yesterday morning, and they brought you here. You have two viral infections and are also anemic. They kept you overnight for observation.”
My face scrunched. “Anemic?”
“They had to do a blood transfusion. I spoke to Dr. Benson this morning when he came by to do his rounds, and he gave me his number. He said as soon as you wake up, you can be discharged.”
“Dr. Benson?”
“He said you represented him in his divorce.”
I nodded. Or at least tried to. “How long have I been here?”
“Um…” Ben checked his watch. “You were brought in yesterday at eleven, and it’s nine now, so about twenty-two hours.”
“Have you been here the whole time?”
His jaw ticked. “When I got home and fell asleep, Trevor tried to call, but since I didn’t have his number programmed, it was silent. I didn’t get the call until he tried me on your phone. He didn’t get through to me until eight but I haven’t left your side since you were given this room?—"
“I had a transfusion?” I asked, still trying to process the information he’d given me.
He nodded. “You are severely anemic.”
“I am?”
“Yeah, and you also have two viral infections. When you came in, your fever was a hundred and four, and you were severely dehydrated. They kept you overnight to give you fluids and for observation.”
“And you stayed?”
“Of course I stayed. You’re my wife.”
I started to shake my head, but it hurt. “You didn’t have to… I would have been…”
“Knock.” Another voice sounded.
It took me a second, but I realized it was Trevor. He entered the room with flowers and a large bag. “Good morning, sunshines!”
“Morning,” I grinned.
He walked to the other side of the bed, leaned down, and kissed my forehead.
“Can you stay with her?” Ben asked. “I’m going to go call Dr. Benson and get her released so I can take her home.”
“I’ll be here.”
“Donotleave her.”
Trevor did what I could only assume was the sign for Scout’s Honor, although I was ninety-nine percent sure he’d never been a scout in his life.
“I brought you a change of clothes.” He held up the bag. “And I snuck you in a Sadie Special.”
Normally, a Sadie Special would hit the spot, but I felt a little nauseous.
“How are you feeling?” he asked.
