“Nope.” She throws daggers out of her eyes at me. “It resembles life.”
She places a hand on my cheek. “As does your story. It’s shitty what happened to you but you can’t let it stop you from living your life.”
I place my forehead against hers. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to live my life. With you. What do you say? You want to make this fake relationship into something real?”
She bites her lip. Those bright red lips are tempting. I have at least a thousand ideas of what I want to do with them, to them. But I stay my path. I’m not using sex to convince her.
“I need to think about it.”
I frown and she taps my nose. “I’m not saying no. I’m saying my life is moving faster than Uncle Mercury’s Dodge Charger and I need a moment to catch up.”
I kiss her forehead before stepping away. “I understand.”
“You do?”
I do. Am I happy she didn’t jump at the chance to date me? Hell no. But I can understand her needing time. I spent two days contemplating what to do after I realized I’m falling for her. I can give her the same courtesy.
Chapter 20
Pretending – only works when people don’t know you’re faking
Mercy
Good morning, sassy girl
I frown at the message from Gibson. He sends them constantly. Sweet little messages to remind me he’s thinking of me. Or, they would be sweet, if he wasn’t pushing me. Apparently agreeing to give me time doesn’t mean not pushing me. Sneaky man.
How did you sleep?
Are you having a good day?
I groan. Why does he have to be sweet? No one’s ever asked me about my day before. Not even my mom when I was little.
“Hey, Mercy!” Indigo shouts.
My brow wrinkles as I walk out of the garage to discover Indigo standing with Virginia and Leia in the driveway.
“What are you doing here?”
“We’re here to convince you to stay with Gibson,” Leia says.
Indigo slaps her shoulder. “You weren’t supposed to tell her.”
Virginia snorts. “Because this is a secret mission?”
Indigo crosses her arms over her chest. “This is a secret mission.”
“You’ve been hanging around the gossip gals too much,” Leia grumbles.
“And you’re starting to resemble your grumpy man.”
Leia waves her hand in the air. “I think you mean grumpy fiancé.”
“Oh my god!” I squeal and rush to hug her. “Congratulations.”
“What happened? Did he get down on one knee? Or just grunt at you?” I ask when we pull apart.
Indigo pushes her way in between us. “We’ll tell you all about it when you come with us.”
