“It’s obviously something!” she argued. “Antonio, go get your hand seen to!”
He shook his head. “After what you just went through, a bit of a bent finger is nothing.”
Before Astra could argue further, the nurse returned with a small x-ray machine. Thankfully, Astra’s squeezing had only caused a sprain. Another doctor came in to splint the finger and gave him some pain pills.
“I’m so sorry!” she whispered to him when he returned to her side. The nurses had helped Astra get cleaned up and into a new hospital robe. She felt almost euphoric as she helped their newborn son nurse for the first time.
“I’m not,” Antonio replied, coming back to stand beside her. He stared, stunned by the beauty of watching his son find nourishment from his wife’s breast. “I don’t have the words for how beautiful you are at this moment.”
Astra turned to smile at him, all the love she felt for him shining in her eyes. “I love you!” she whispered. “I love you and think that you are amazing!”
“I love you too!” he said, then looked at their son. Stroking his tiny head, they both laughed as the tuft of black hair popped right back up. “And you gave me a son!” The teasing glint in his eyes warned her before he asked, “When do we get to start on creating a daughter?”
Astra stared at him for a long moment, then burst out laughing, feeling his love in the way he touched her and their son. “Just you wait until I can walk again.”
He merely smiled, delighted by the not-so-ominous threat.
