"If I have been so remiss in my duties, I'm so proud of you, Trinity. How happy you are. How well you're doing in school. You have no idea how honored I am that I earned your love."
"Loving you was pretty easy, Rogue."
I knew that wasn't altogether true. There was no questioning our attraction to each other. We both had insecurities that we'd needed to work through. Mine had surprised me. My overabundance of self-confidence hid a pretty big issue with whether I was good enough for my babygirl. Would I take care of her the way she needed? We'd worked it out, but it hadn't been completely smooth-sailing over the year since we'd met.
There were nights she went to Freida's apartment to bitch about me, but I always showed up the next morning to pick her up. A kiss. A few ‘I'm sorries’ and we went on with our days. I'd sensed it the night I saw her, she'd be my everything. No questions or doubts. I'd waited my entire life for the woman in my arms.
"Love you." I tipped my chin and she lowered her mouth to mine.
"Love you too."
I loved the shape of her smile against mine. The first time I put it there, I'd promised I'd never give her a reason to lose it. So far, I hadn't failed. Even in our disagreements and anger, she knew she owned me. I'd never give her a reason to rethink the chance she took.
Lacing my fingers through hers, I led her to the door for dinner with her parents, but afterward, she was all mine. And I hoped that possession lasted a lifetime.
