She makes a dismissive noise that matches her hand gesture. "The odds of that are less than two percent."

"According to what data?"

"Tabitha Remington's Bureau of Statistics."

"I see. All right, then. I'll swerve into the other lane since you assured me nothing bad will happen if I do that."

She leans over the center console and palms my groin. "Let's do it."

"Yes, let's. Unzip my trousers, would you?"

Tabitha stares at me for a moment, clearly trying to determine whether I'm still teasing her. Then she settles down in her seat again. "I think we've taken that joke as far as possible."

"Yes, we have. Now, tell me all about the sights along our route."

"Why do you want to hear about them if you won't see them until tomorrow?"

I shrug. "I love listening to your voice."

She unhooks her seatbelt for the sole purpose of crawling over the console to kiss my cheek. Then she drops back onto her seat.

I glance at her out of the corner of my eye. "What was that for?"

"You said you love listening to my voice. That's the best compliment I've ever received." She brings her mobile out of her purse and starts swiping her finger around on the screen. "Time to tell you about the sights. I'm just doing a search for the best fun attractions."

"But you live here. Don't you already know about those places?"

"I live in Arlington, and I haven't gone home as often as I should. Not because I'm embarrassed by my family. I was just always too tired to drive six hours home and back."

"That doesn't explain why you're unfamiliar with the tourist sights."

She slouches in her chair a touch. "I drove right past all that stuff. A six-hour drive alone is, well, lonely."

I reach over the console to give her hand a squeeze. "You are not alone anymore."

Chapter Eighteen

Tabitha

You are not alone anymore. When Spencer spoke those words, warmth blossomed in my chest, spreading out to encompass my whole body. I feel tingly and excited too, though not in a sexual way. Those five simple words changed everything for me. I can't deny the truth, and I'm not the sort of person who would panic at such a romantic declaration. No, the truth is obvious.

I'm falling for Spencer.

That's why I'm taking him home to meet my family. I hadn't realized that until just a minute ago, but it's incredibly obvious now that I've accepted the fact that I have serious feelings for Spencer.

"Tabitha, are you all right?"

"Yes." The way I jerked when he said that probably didn't make my affirmation believable. "I'm fine, promise. I was just thinking, that's all."

"About what?"

I pretend I didn't hear his question and study the map on my phone. "Okay, our first destination that we'll be driving past on the freeway is Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive takes you through all the gorgeous scenic places in the park including the Blue Ridge Mountains."

"That does sound lovely."

"In Roanoke, you can explore the Virginia Museum of Transportation. It has lots of historic vehicles on display."

"Interesting. I do love all sorts of vehicles, though I've never been able to afford a flash car."
