Chapter twenty-three

Elizabeth

As I walked further into his compound, I saw one of the staff members I recognized from the last time I was here. It was the house manager.

“Good evening! Good to see you again,” I greeted.

“Welcome, ma’am. Good to see you again.”

“Is Mr. Will around?”

“Oh yes, he is. . .”

I noticed a brief look of hesitation on her face before she hurriedly replaced it with a smile.

“Is anything the matter?” I asked.

“Not at all, ma’am. This way,” she said as she opened the door for me.

“Don’t worry, I know my way. You can go back to your task outside,” I said, wanting a private moment to collect myself and gather my confidence before going further in.

“Oh, all right, ma’am. Thank you,” she said before walking out, closing the door behind her.

Alone now, I let out another breath, feeling my heart racing even faster. This was my moment to tell him how I felt and perhaps get rejected. But I had mentally prepared for possible outcomes. The worst-case scenario was canceling the contract and going back to the way things used to be. Was I okay with that? Of course not, but I knew that if it was meant to be, it would happen.

All right, Elizabeth, here we go.

I walked into the living room, the same place where Will and I had spent time together the last time. I could hear soft voices, so I knew he was definitely there. However, what I saw when I entered was far from what I had ever imagined. None of the scenarios I had envisioned prepared me for this moment. A sudden surge of pressure overwhelmed me, my heart gradually tightening in my chest as I watched them.

“Will?” I said softly, almost like a whisper, but it was loud enough for him to hear me.

The moment he heard me call his name, he abruptly jerked the lady off him, looking at me, clearly bewildered.

Unable to process what I just saw and with no idea what to do, I rushed out of the living room. But not before a teardrop escaped my eyes, embarrassing me even further in the presence of Will and his other woman.

As I rushed out, I saw the house manager look at me with pity. That explained the look of hesitation she had earlier. She probably knew what Will was up to and wanted to stop me from the inevitable pain. But that was the least of my concerns as I rushed out.

I could hear Will calling out to me from behind, but that was all the motivation I needed to rush out of his compound immediately. As soon as I was outside, I hurriedly called a cab.

My entire thought process was still numb. All I wanted was to go home, lie on my bed, and process my emotions. Of all the scenarios I prepared in my head, nothing prepared me for this one.

The moment I got into the taxi, my body fully registered the pain I was feeling. As I settled into the seat, the intensity of the pain, betrayal, and disappointment hit me.

I could see the taxi driver looking at me occasionally through the rear-view mirror as I shed tears. But then, I couldn’t care less. What mattered to me was what I was dealing with inside. It still all felt surreal to me.

Just a few days ago, he had told me he liked me. All this time, he had been acting all nice, as though he wanted something more. Yet, here I was, witnessing another woman with him. Didn’t he explicitly state in the contract that we weren’t allowed to date anyone? Yet here he was, cheating!

I allowed myself to express all that I felt, and it was even more painful as I realized he wasn’t actually cheating. This was a fake relationship to start with, so I could not possibly claim he was cheating.

Oh, God.

I rested my head on the window, looking out at the streets even though my heart was in shambles.

“Madam, we’re here,” the taxi driver announced.

I was brought out of my thoughts, realizing we were parked in front of my place.

Oh, thank God.
