As I stole glances at her from time to time, I wondered if she would display any signs of emotion in response to the conversation I had with Jecintha and her crew. But there was nothing—no emotions other than the smile on her face as she interacted with a few of my clients.

That smile.

Still as beautiful and warm.

I took a deep breath as I tried to put myself together.

Chapter seventeen

Elizabeth

“Yes, sir, and it’s my pleasure,” I said finally to one of Will’s clients I had met.

As I watched the man walk away, I let out an exhausted breath, glad the conversation was over.

Don’t get me wrong—I enjoyed the conversation that I had with him, but then, I was getting tired and worn out.

The conversation was lengthy, and I had little energy to remain standing, especially not with the shoes I had on.

Honestly, I still struggle to feel comfortable wearing heels. How I wish women didn’t have to go through the stress of putting themselves through so much discomfort.

Letting out a sigh, I went over to the seat so my legs could at least have a break.

As I looked around, I spotted Will first, and from what I saw, it seemed like he and his client were deeply engaged in conversation. One could easily tell from his facial expression that he was fully involved in the ongoing discussion.

Despite that, I noticed how he looked around from time to time as if searching for something or someone—possibly me. The moment his eyes met with mine, I saw the look of satisfaction on his face, and it was at that moment I realized he had been looking for me all along.

How thoughtful.

Still seated, I looked around and spotted the women from earlier, the ones Will had been speaking with, and immediately, I was reminded of their conversation about me.

Of course, hearing those women speak horribly about me was not pleasing in any way, but then again, I was impressed at how Will had stood up for me.

Although I had to pretend I didn’t hear a thing, to be honest, the words they had uttered hurt! Hearing one woman call another woman ugly wasn’t at all what I wanted to hear.

Lost in my thoughts, I had no idea Will had walked up to me.

“You good?” he asked.

“Oh yes, I am. You done with your meeting?”

“To an extent, yes, but I’m tired of this party. You ready to leave?”

“I was born ready.”

“Now that’s the energy!” Will said as he helped me up. Then, we walked out of the venue together.

No words could describe how liberating it felt to be out of that space. As we got to the car, I sat and remained silent throughout the ride. I could feel Will looking at me at intervals, which made me wonder if there was an issue or something he wanted to say.

Once we reached my place, Will said, “Thank you for tonight, Liz.”

“Sure, my pleasure,” I responded. Then, before stepping out of the car, I took off my shoes to walk barefoot toward the entrance.

“Wait a minute!” he said.

“Yes?” I looked back to see him rushing out of the car to meet me.

“Are you okay? Are we good?” he asked.
