Ignoring her comment, I kept on with the ride, and indeed, that was the last conversation we had until we reached the venue.

I guess Elizabeth and I were not made to click. That is the only explanation as to why we never had a proper conversation without one of us getting on the nerves of the other.

“Here we are. Please stick to the script, okay?”

“Of course.”

“Hold on a minute.” I reached into the inner pocket of my suit and retrieved the ring box, surprising Elizabeth. I could see the shock on her face.

“You’re acting as though I’m proposing to you.”

I watched her roll her eyes, causing me to chuckle slightly.

“Give me your hand,” I said, taking out the emerald diamond-cut ring and slipping it onto her ring finger.

“Wow,” Elizabeth said as she raised her hand and looked at it.

“That ring is expensive. You better keep it well.”

“I didn’t plan to lose it now, did I? Besides, you could have gotten me any cheap ring rather than diamonds.”

“You’re my fiancée. How do you think people will react if they see my girl wearing a fake diamond? Never!”

“I see,” Elizabeth responded plainly as she exited the car, and I followed suit.

Going over to her side, I linked her arm through mine as we approached the entrance. Immediately, a ton of reporters and paparazzi gathered around us as we neared the entrance.

Being used to this lifestyle, I simply waved to them, but I couldn’t help but notice Elizabeth’s discomfort. It was evident that this environment was all new to her.

I placed my arms around her, pulling her closer to me and shielding her from the flashes of light until we got securely inside the venue.

“Sorry about that. They are all going crazy to see the woman I’m with tonight.”

“Must be nice,” Elizabeth responded with a fake smile on her face.

“Come on, let’s go mingle.”

In less than a minute, I already had a few popular investors gather around me to welcome me.

Naturally, with Elizabeth standing right beside me, she instantly became the subject of conversation, with people offering their congratulations left, right, and center.

Count on me to capitalize on the situation, deftly steering conversations toward business matters. That is the only reason why I’m present here anyway. Who cares about parties? Parties are just opportunities for people to show off their wealth and spend more carelessly, in my opinion. At least I could help them divert their money into my business and make me richer.

I went with the flow and, as usual, started gradually getting their minds invested. It was only a matter of time before they agreed to my proposal and began signing contracts with me.

Most people don’t realize it, but the best place to find quality clients is at parties, where their egos are inflated and they’re influenced by alcohol. With each of them wanting to impress the other, they commit themselves to deals in an attempt to show off.

Chapter eleven

Elizabeth

I stood beside Will, observing him dominate the conversation, cutting my statements short as if I were irrelevant. Letting out a breath, I played with the ring on my finger. It was beautiful but, unfortunately, not my perfect size.

If he wanted to get me a ring, he could have at least asked for my size instead of getting one that could easily slip off. Letting out another breath, I adjusted myself as my legs were starting to ache.

God knows how much I hate wearing heels, but of course, I had to put on these three-inch pencil heels to match the dress I was wearing.

If I wasn’t relevant in the conversation, he could at least release me to go have my seat rather than using me first as the subject of discussion and then smoothly diverting into business talks with his clients. With how smooth he was, it felt as though he had pre-planned this moment in his head.
