CHAPTER FORTY

JOSEF

The condo was empty by the time I arrived from the private airport.

At first, I hadn’t called Meredith because I wanted to surprise her.

But when I dialed Mario’s number from the car, it had gone straight to voicemail.

That was when my hackles started to rise.

You didn’t get to where I had in my business without learning to trust your instincts.

After what I’d discovered before takeoff, my instincts were setting off full fucking alarms.

I took a deep breath and pulled up the tracking app I had installed in every vehicle and every cell phone belonging to all Sigma International and Volkov Industries employees.

And yeah, I had the software on my wife’s phone, too.

I’d apologize later for the invasion of privacy. It was hardly the first time, and it would not be my last.

Fucking sue me.

I’d never be negligent about my wife’s security again.

“Fuck,” I cursed aloud when both Mario and Meredith’s phones pinged at the same location.

A location neither of them should have been at.

I dialed Mario’s second in command, a man named Tom Fields. Tom’s location was not showing up. Neither were the three men purported to be with him, nor their vehicle.

“What the fuck?” I growled, already moving for the elevator.

I called Darius first.

“I need everyone available to meet me at the address I just texted you?—”

“Yes, Boss. What’s going on?”

“Just tell Adrik and Marat what is going on. And I want you to meet me there.”

“How many should I send?”

“As many as we have,” I growled.

Thunder roared in my ears as I blurred out of the elevator through the garage to my SUV. My driver, Edgar, hadn’t even had the chance to start washing the thing.

“Boss?”

“Key! No time!”

I grabbed it and jumped into the front seat of the SUV, and I took off without him.

The mass text I’d sent had probably been delayed because the garage was underground. Even with my juice, Wi-Fi sucked in the garage. But he’d learn what was up soon enough, and he’d find his own way there.

I had no time to spare. Meredith was in trouble.

Hold on, Little Red. I’m coming for you.
