“She will be, sweet girl. Don’t you worry. I’m sorry we met like this, but I’m glad you’re here.” Mama June says.
I smile and nod at her, then turn my attention to Shadow. He hasn’t said a word yet. He looks the most affected, if I’m being honest.
“Shadow?” I say, warily.
He looks up and locks eyes with me. His eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you. You’re my little sister; that’s my job.”
The minute the words are out of his mouth, I’m off Blade’s lap and heading for my brother. As soon as I reach him, I wrap my arms around him. It’s a little awkward with me standing and him sitting, but I don’t care. He clearly needs this right now.
Pulling back, I stare into his eyes. “You’re protecting me now. You want to find every person who hurt me? Go ahead, if I know Blade like I think I do. Tech is already compiling a list.”
Shadow shoots to look at Blade, who’s got an evil smirk on his face and is nodding his head. However, before anyone can say anything, Shadow’s phone starts ringing on the table. He leans over me to look, and if I hadn't been so close, I might have missed it, but he gets a look of distress. He doesn’t answer, though. He clicks his screen and then places it face down on the table.
We go back to talking, with Blade explaining what he’s already set in motion with Tech and me answering more questions about just what happened to me growing up. Also explaining how I managed to make her stop at seventeen. Telling them about the blackmail material I managed to record about her illegal dealings at least manages to draw little smiles from them all. I can’t help but feel like the luckiest woman on the planet to be a part of this now. I’d never have had the opportunity to have those pictures destroyed or for every man who abused me to get what’s coming to them if I hadn't overheard about these people. My family.
Shadow’s phone starts vibrating again, and this time he answers.
“Hello.” He says as he answers.
We can’t exactly hear what’s being said on the other side, but we can make out a voice shouting at him. Shadow now has everyone’s attention, and from the look on his face, he isn’t happy about it.
“I can’t talk right now. I’m in a meeting.” He says, interrupting whoever is on the phone.
He listens to whatever they have to say before hanging up and blowing out a massive breath.
“Everything okay?” Wreck asks, looking at Shadow curiously.
“Yeah fine. Sorry about that.”
The conversation carries on around me, with them all discussing what to do once they have names, but I’m not paying attention. I’m focused on Wreck, who doesn’t look happy at all. He looks annoyed. What’s that all about?
Chapter Twenty-Two
Shadow
That meeting was hard, and the phone call from Megan hasn’t exactly made anything better for me. She’s pissed that I didn’t answer her call right away. She never cares that I have a job as VP, and that takes up a lot of my time. She expects me to always answer her straight away, and when I don't, she throws massive fits.
I get that she wants to be my number one priority, but sometimes that’s just not feasible. I’m VP of a MC for crying out loud. God, it would be so much simpler if she would let me stop hiding our relationship. I know people are starting to get suspicious. Especially Wreck and Blade. Wreck well because he’s Wreck; if anyone is going to figure out I’m hiding shit, it’s going to be my best friend. I saw the look on his face after my phone call; he knows everything wasn't fine, like I said. He knows I was lying, and he's not going to let that stand. Then there’s Blade. Because of what he witnessed at Inferno’s, he may have let it go at the time, but I know he shelved it in his mind. I need to talk to Megan again. We need to stop hiding. I can’t keep living like this. This isn't me; I don't keep secrets. I don't like secrets.
Leaving The Clubhouse, I hop on my Harley Dyna and make my way over to Megan’s. May as well deal with this sooner rather than later. Pulling up in front of her house, which she shares with her Mom and brother, I’m not surprised when she opens the door and is standing waiting for me with her hands on her hips. Looking annoyed.
“Meg, please don’t start. Today has been hard enough.” I say as I approach her.
“Get the fuck in here, Shadow.” She replies angrily. Turning on her heels and stomping into the house. I follow behind and close the door.
The house is quiet, so I know her Mom and brother aren’t home. If they were, I'd hear her brother playing his games. It’s never quiet here when he’s home.
“Well?” She asks. I’m guessing she wants me to explain today.
“I told you my sister arrived; well, earlier today, so did my mother. Some horrible things were exposed, and we were talking about them when you rang.”
“Not fucking good enough, Shadow! I’m your girlfriend. I should come before everything!” She shouts.
“And how do you expect me to explain anything to my family when you won’t let me tell them about us?” I shout back.
Her eyes go hard, and before I know it, she’s throwing a vase that’s on the table next to her towards my head. I don’t have a chance to dodge; it catches the corner of my forehead and breaks. Little shards of glass are raining down all around me. Some even cause little cuts.
"Shit, I’m so sorry, Shadow.” She says, as she rushes towards me.
