“Um, yeah. He wanted to take Maisy out and didn’t want to take her on his bike. It was cold. Aren’t you cold?”
He’s suddenly worried for my well-being?
“He has Maisy??” I thunder. That’s it. I can’t be calm anymore. I sense the steam coming out of my ears. “Talk, Martin. Was–Maisy–with–him?”
“Yes, boss.” Martin knows me, and he knows how close to dying he is. “I’m sorry, boss. He asked me, and I-I thought we were okay with the Delgados. I let him have my car. Sorry, boss. I-I’m sor–”
“I need your registration! Text it to me!” I shout and slam the door in his face.
“Arghhhhh!” I growl on my way up to the attic, where my laptop is, where I need to figure out where Kai went.I suddenly have enough anger to shift the world off its axis.
On the way up, I stop at Maisy’s room, just in case. To see if Kai really did what he did. I walk inside and check the ensuite. Fucking Kai! Her closet’s open, and some of her clothes are missing.
On the bed is a scrunched-up piece of paper, probably some whining apology of a letter. I disregard it and race to my bedroom where I pick up my cell, then continue to the attic.
I dial Logan’s number first. I must tell him what Kai’s done, but it goes straight to voicemail.
“Call me as soon as you hear this message!” I bark into the phone.
Then, I call Kai. Kai, you better answer me, you fucker!
His cell also redirects to voicemail. “Kai, you don’t know what you’ve done. Call me as soon as you get this message!”
Fucking idiot! Every living person in New York will be after her, and they’ll kill anyone in their way.
LOGAN
Everything is wrong. Everything. Even waking up this morning in my penthouse, at the top of the world, doesn’t feel right. My world collapsed the moment I found out Maisy was a Slav. No wonder she wanted to kill Milan. She didn’t want him to tell me about my mother. And for that, I can never forgive her.
But was hiring Lukash too much?
The fuck it was. But then again, she shouldn’t die at the hands of some random person. If she’s dying, we should kill her. I’ll just point the gun at her and look away. That’s how I killed my first Slav, anyway. This shouldn’t be any different.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
I can’t believe I put a hit on her. I grab my cell from the bedside table; I have a missed call from Orion. Shit! Has she been killed already, and Orion’s informing me of the fact?
I call Lukash, but it just rings. Why did I think he’d answer? The moment I ordered that hit, I knew there were no takebacks. It’s a done deal. The hit is as real as the daylight.
I dial Orion’s number next. I’ve never been as worried in my life as I am right at this very moment.
“Logan!” The distress in Orion’s voice is real.
Goddamn! “Is it done? Is Maisy dead? Has she been killed already? Tell me!”
“What are you talking about? No! Kai has her!” Orion roars. “The fucker took her last night without telling anyone!”
“What? And those two idiots at your house – why did they let him go? For fuck’s sake, Orion. Kai’s in deeper shit than he knows.”
“Yeah, tell me about it. I’m gonna kill that motherfucker when I get my hands on him.”
“No, no, you don’t get it. Orion, last night, I called a hit on Maisy. I was in a really bad place, and Maisy… she killed Milan. And with her being a Slav, I thought there was another reason why she killed him and, I got angry.”
“You what?!” He’s furious, and rightly so. “Logan, you…you… Call it off! Now!”
“I can’t reach him, goddamnit! One way or another, it will be done. He’s thorough.”
“Shit! You just had to do that, you fucker! Where are you now?”
